Dr. Phani Sharma Commemorative Talent Award for Sports has been awarded to the budding Tennis player from Assam Kakoli Lahkar at a function held at Srimanta Shankardeb Kalakhetra, Guwahati on August 23 evening. The award contain a one-time grant of Rupees One lakh and a certificate. This award is mainly to encouraging the young talent from Assam, preferably from a weak economic background. The award has been instituted by the Dr. Phani Sharma Welfare Trust. Kakoli Lahkar's Current India rankings in table tennis are: 11th in Under 17, 18th in Under. Current ranking in Assam: 1st in Under17 and under 3rd in Womens category.
This award has been given at a programme oragnised in commemoration of the birth anniversary of noted entrepreneur, sportsperson, organizer Late Dr. Phani Sharma. Besides being a businessman by profession, he had immense contribution towards sports, social works and other various aspects of the society. Dr. Sharma was also an important figure in the Assam state politics and at the time of his death in the year 2007 he was the treasurer of the Congress (I).

Altogether nine people have been injured when a powerful bomb exploded in Tezpur town at around 2-30 on this afternoon. Three of them are in critical. According to information, the blast took place at Bargola, at a distance of 100 meter away from the Tezpur Police station. Eyewitness say the bomb was planted at a bicycle. The injured people have been rushed to hospital. Police and civil officials are there in the spot. But no lead has been achieved so far. Details are awaited.

The 6th Kaziranga Elephant Festival has been postponed to April 18-20 due to the ongoing examinations, elephant census in the KNP scheduled from February 20 to 26 as well as some other reasons.Earlier, it was informally decided to organise the KEF from February 27 to 29 . Police charged with batons on an illegal occupant of government land as he tries to block roads and stop police from entering in Agartala, Tripura on 26-02-08. Hundreds of police personnel armed with batons, shields, tear gas and gun started gathering at the Kunjaban area right from the dawn and warned illegal occupants to evacuate the area to which the occupants attacked thus police were compelled to use of baton. 21 persons most of them women were injured and at least 42 persons were arrested. Former Assam Assembly Speaker Pulakesh Baruah will seek legal action against the excess inflicted on him after he was arrested by the Nalbari police in connection with the teacher recruitment scam in Nalbari district.
