Moderate tremor jolts NE

A moderate magnitude tremor struck no less panic in Assam and its neighbouring north eastern state on Tuesday afternoon.

Measuring 5.6 in Richter scale, the tremor was felt at 2-40 in the afternoon when the panic stricken people in the high rise building came down to the open field.

The earthquake was originated along the Indo-Bangladesh border 8 Km beneath the surface where the high rise buildings and towers started rattling for several seconds.

Vehicles in the city of Guwahati halted as the denizens started thronging the roads seeking safety of their lives. But there is so far no report of any casualty.

Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi on Saturday claimed to have restored normalcy in trouble-torn Goalpara district is now peaceful and the displaced people will be rehabilitated soon.Gogoi said that the situation in Rabha-Hasong area is now peaceful. NHRC notice to Dispur on violence

Poll related violence refuses to die down. Two more people were killed in police firing in Dhubri district on Friday. The incident took place during poll counting in Hathsinghmari area of the South Salamara sub division when a group of men allegedly tried to storm into a counting centre and destroy ballot boxes for the elections.Five other people were also injured in the firing by Assam Police and paramilitary forces.It comes three days after 20 people were killed in police firing in Goalpara district where protests by the Rabha Hajong tribe during Tuesday's village council elections triggered violence.The police said it has had to open fire because members of the Rabha Hajong tribe were...

Curfew relaxed in Goalpara

There seems to be some let up in the overall situation in Goalpara. Goalpara: Vote counting on Friday

Counting of votes of the three-phase panchayat elections in Goalpara district was postponed for Friday with the entire exercise now to be completed within one day.The indefinite curfew continued in Krishnai and Mornoi areas. The movement of people by river and other water-bodies in the district between 3 pm to 7 am was banned by the district administration till further orders to prevent movement of miscreants.

Bandh cripples Bagsa district

A car and two trucks were damaged during the BTAD bandh that paralyzes Bagsa district on Thursday.The bandh enforcers stopped movement of all vehicles in the area, threatening to destroy them.The bandh, supported by the Rabha Hasong Students Union, was called to protest against the alleged killing of people of the Rabha Hasong ethnic community in police firing and clashes in Goalpara district during the panchayat elections on February 12.Markets, shops, offices, banks, educational institutions remained closed and vehicles kept off the roads in the Bodoland Territorial Autonomous Districts comprising Kokrajhar, Udalguri, Baksa and Chirang districts.

The sporadic incidents of violence that cripples Goalpara and Kamrup rural district are spreading to BTAD areas. Gogoi owns up responsibility

Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi on Wednesday ordered a thorough judicial probe into the poll related incidents in Goalpara. The judicial panel will find out if the protests against the elections were instigated. Talking to reporters in Guwahati on Wednesday, he said that violence took place in 22 places. He further owned up full responsibility for the violence.He defended the elections and criticised the Opposition for blaming the government and not those who were disrupting the elections. The government has announced a compensation of Rs. 5 lakh for the families of those killed in the police firing.
