Nature conservation organisations like Wildflowers, CCER and Deopahar Researve Demand Committee hails the latest order of National Green Tribunal (NGT) on demolition of a wall blocking an elephant corridor near the Kaziranga National Park. On last Wednesday the tribunal asked the Numaligarh Refinery Limited (NFL), a public sector company, to demolish a 2.2 kilometre long wall blocking the elephant corridor within one month.
The NGT proposed that the township of refinery ‘cannot be allowed’ as it comes in a “No Development Zone”.
The green tribunal has also imposed a fine of Rs. 25 lakh for destroying forest and levelling a hill for the refinery.
Hailing the NGT order, Chandan Kumar Duarah, eminent environmentalist and science writer in Assam appeals both Forest and Archeology Departments to implement schemes to conserve resources of the area under encroachment of oil depot businessman and Numaligarh Tea Estate too. The Nulai Garh has been destroying by a oil depot by the roadside and some archeological ruin lying in Numaligarh Tea Estate, Duarah, who in the Secretary of Deopahar Reserve Forest Demand Committee said.
