Aassam girl Kalpana on NDTV Imagine
For the 1st time on a national stage, Assam’s daughter Kalpana Patowary was seen singing an Assamese song wearing a traditional Assamese dress. The name of the programme is “Junoon Kuch Kar Dikhane Ka” which is being aired on a new Hindi entertainment channel called NDTV IMAGINE at 8:30 p.m. from every Friday to Sunday. It was nice to hear songs like “axom dekhor bagisare suali…..champa nohoi mure nam chameli”, “manuhey manuhor babey jadihey..” in Kalpana’s melodious voice. Everyone including the judges, audiences were seems to enjoying Assamese songs sung by Kalpana. “Junoon Kuch Kar Dikhane Ka” is a musical reality show to decide country’s most favourite genre of music. There are three genres of music in the programme which includes Sufi, Folk Songs and Hindi Film Music. Kalpana was invited to represent folk music of Bihar and UP as Kalpan has earned a name for herself in Bhojpuri songs and as such she is quite popular among the peoples of UP and Bihar. Kalpana look upon it as a golden opportunity to bring the Assamese folk songs to the international level. She requested NDTV IMAGINE to allow her to sing Assamese folk songs also. But the producers of the programme were at first not interested to include Assamese folk songs in the programme as the Assamese folk songs were not so popular in national level. Her incessant efforts bore fruits when NDTV IMAGINE agreed to include Assamese folk songs in the programme on one condition that Kalpana should concentrate more on Bhojpuri folks. And this is how Kalpana’s journey in “Junoon Kuch Kar Dikhane Ka” begun. It was very nice to see Kalpana singing “manuhey manuhor babey jadihey..” with Ila Arun, one of the judge of the show.
Assamese people were always very supportive with regard to any Assamese contestant in such reality shows. Recent example of this support is Debojit and Anamika. Now it is Kalpana’s turn to make it to the top and for this she needs the good wishes and blessings of the people of Assam. According to Kalpana, when the other contestants knew that she is from Assam everyone get afraid, at first she don’t knew what was the matter later she came to know that everybody fears Assamese contestant as Assamese people were known for their generous voting in support of their candidate. To vote for Kalpana one has to write “Junoon 21” and send it to 56388. We all wish her success in the show.

Sri Dutta Dev Goswami, the Satradhikar of Bhogpur Satra, Majuli and also the working President of Assam Satra Mahasabha, today felicitated Ms. Bobita Bora, Dist. Correspondent of Dainik Janambhumi, at a function held at Kakoty Gaon Namghar, Betioni Golaghat. Nearly 1200 members of Krishak Mukti Sangram Samity, Nari Mukti Sangram Samity and Brihattar Tengani Mukti Sangram Samity staged a rail blockade programme at Jamuguri, Furkating and Borpathar at Golaghat District from 11 am to 2 pm on Tuesday, demanding the immediate release of peasant leader and firebrand RTI activist Akhil Gogoi. As a result of the blockade, the movement of Janasatabdi Express, Amritsar Express and a Passenger train was disrupted at Jamuguri, Furkating and Borpathar respectively. The blockade was called off temporarily at 2 pm but the organisations have warned of more strict and severe agitation in the coming days if Akhil Gogoi is not released in the next few days.

The world heritage site Kaziranga National Park, the home to the rare one horned rhino and several other species of animals has to reel under flood every monsoon. Every year flood plays havoc among the animal community of the Park. Normal life has been affected today in Golaghat following a 12-hour Assam Bandh called by Krishak Mukti Sangram Samity. The whole of Golaghat Town were a deserted look during the Bandh. There has been no incident of violence reported. The Bandh has been called against the arrest of firebrand RTI activist and leader of Krishak Mukti Sangram Samity Akhil Gogoi. An Assamese lady has been alleged to be burnt by her husband in Bangalore on 19th June. The incident is another gory death caused by increasing dowry demand by the victim’s husband. The victim, Priakhi Baruah, 19, of Balijan in Golaghat District, had married Apurba Saikia of Jamunamukh in Nagaon District, in January this year. Family sources of Priyakhi revealed that the accused Apurba Saikia was harassing the victim for dowry, since their marriage. Election expenditure incurred by contesting candidates of the recently concluded Assam Assembly Election from Golaghat and Khumtai Legislative Assembly Constituencies has submitted their accounts for inspection before the District Election Officer (DEO), Golaghat on 12th and 13th June. However the Elections Department did not go merely by the accounts submitted by candidates in assessing their election expenditure.
