Tearful farewell to Anjan Dutta

The mortal remains of Anjan Dutta were consigned to flames on Friday a day after the APCC president died of cardiac arrest in New Delhi. After last respect to the lifeless former minister in Guwahati and Sivasagar, Dutta’s body was taken to Gaurisagar where he was cremated with full state honour in the afternoon. Former Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi and forest minister Pramila Rani Brahma, MP Ripun Bora were prominent among those who were present at the cremation ground. Before that thousands of bereaved Congress men received Dutta’s body at the Jorhat Airport in the morning and was taken to Sivasagar to facilitate his fans to pay their last respect in Sivasagar town and his birth place Gayan gaon.

Dutta died of cardiac ailment on Thursday morning at the All India Institute of Medical Science a couple of weeks after he was rushed to it. The party in rank and file have condoled his death and conveyed deep sympathy to the bereaved family members.

JORHAT:Union minister Nitin Gadkari is ailing. Gadkari, who is on a two days visit to the state fell ill suddenly as he was attending a function to unveil the ₹237 crore project of the Brahmaputra Board in Majuli. When chief minister Sarbananda Sonowal was addressing the meeting, the Union water resources development minister complained of uneasyness on the stage. Then he was taken away from the spot and his personal physician started attending on him. He is learnt to be stable now. He was scheduled to review the functionings of the Brahmaputra Board at Kaziranga in the evening.
GUWAHATI: The Asom Sahitya Sabha is all set to get Dr Paramananda Rajbangsi as its president. The state's largest literary body conducted a ballot voting recently at its headquarters in Jorhat where Rajbangshi topped the choice of the electorates. The electorates further voted Dr Hemanta Kumar Baruah as vice president while Padum Rajkhowa has been elected as the principal Secretary of the organization. For the first time the Asom Sahitya Sabha conducted the ballot voting to elect its president, vice president and principal secretary. The counting took place in Barpeta Road on Thursday.        
TINSUKIA: Security forces claimed to have apprehended a hardcore ULFA(I) rebel in Tinsukia district who was believed to have been camping in a remote village to extort money. Acting on a tip off, army, police and para military forces raided a hamlet in Pangery where Rajiv Moran, a dreaded rebel was arrested. Police further seized a pistol from his possession. A team of army and police has been interrogating Rajiv to extract more information.
KOKRAJHAR: Altogether 14 districts have joined the clash for taekwondo championship in Kokrajhar which is ending on Friday. Rajya Sabha MP Biswajeet Daimary opened the event at Siknajhar Taekwondo Gymneaium organized by the Bodoland Taekwondo Association in Kokrajhar on Thursday in presence many players and BTC officials. Before that in the same function BTC executive member Rajiv Brahma released the mascot. The event which draws an encouraging response is ending on Friday.
GUWAHATI:A local court in Guwahati on Thursday ordered five year rigorous imprisonment to a corrupt forest officer three months after he was arrested on graft charges. He is none other than Mahat Talukdar, the District Forest Officer in Dhemaji whom the chief minister's anti corruption and vigilence cell caught red handed accepting graft. The special court which convicted him under the Prevention of Corruption Act has imposed him ₹45 lakh as fine in two cases registered against him. He was caught three months back and the vigilance cell seized crores of rupees in cash from his office chamber and residence.
GUWAHATI:The Guwahati police have arrested a lawyer acting on a number of complaints in the city on Thursday. Identified as Mausumi Bora, she was arrested from the Lamb Road at a stones throw distance from the Gauhati High Court where she attends. According to information, on receipt of a number of complaints of extortion, blackmailing and insinuation, a team of Latashil police station sent to arrest her. NAGAON: An unidentified body struck no less sensation in Chaparmukh in Nagaon district on Thursday. Local residents in the area spotted the body floating over the river Kopili which bore injury marks on the head. Then they informed it to the local police who came and fished out it. Investigation is in progress. Police have been trying to ascertain the identity of the body.
KOKRAJHAR: Properties worth ₹3 lakh reduced to ashes when a devastating fire gutted two shops in Kokrajhar on Wednesday night. The fire which is believed to have originated from an electric transformer shifted to a nearby LPG shop which spread to a bicycle mart. Two tenders were deployed but by then both the shops were gutted in the fire. The extent of damage has yet to be ascertained. An investigation is going on.
DUDHNOI: KMSS leader Akhil Gogoi tore apart the BJP-led Assam Government alleging that democracy no longer exists in the state. Talking to reporters immediately after coming out of the Goalpara Central Jail on Wednesday morning he said he was put behind the bars on flimsy ground.
