First NRC draft out with 1.9 cr names

GUWAHATI: Amid unprecedented security arrangement and round-the-clock-vigil the Registrar General of India has published the names of 1.9 crore Indian citizens living in Assam in the first draft of the updated NRC on Sunday.

Registrar General of India Sailesh and NRC coordinator Prateek Hajela released the much awaited first draft at a crowded press conference in Guwahati at 00.00 on Sunday. The draft has 1.8 crore names of Indian citizens living in Assam and the remaining applicants of the total 3.50 crore are being scrutinized.

Apart from four websites, the draft of the updated NRC are available in each of the seva kendras to help the people see their names. The authorities have reiterated that those whose names are not available in this draft need not be worried and that they would be able find out their names in the second draft. Chief minister Sarbananda Sonowal on Sunday also said the genuine citizens have nothing to be worried since their names would be there in thr draft.

Meanwhile, security forces are fanning in the nook and corner of the state apprehending outbreak of law and order situation. Army, police and para military forces are moving in the vulnerable areas to firmly deal with the possible outbreak of any untoward incident.

Many political parties, organizations and individuals have welcomes the initiatiatives saying that it would be a historic job to retain the identity of the Assamese. Of more than 3 crore applicants, the first NRC draft has the names of 1.9 crore. The final NRC is expected towards the year-end.

 The updated NRC draft is available in www.nrcassam.nic.in, www.assam.gov.in, www.assam.mygov.in, www.homeandpolitical.assam.g. RGI and the Assam Government started the process three years back at the instance of the Supreme Court which is the monitoring the entire process. During three months, RGI received 6.5 crore applications and documents covering 68.27 lakh families across the state.
