GUWAHATI: The All Assam Students Union leaders and activists are no less upbeat over the publication of the first NRC draft on Sunday midnight.
The influential student organization is opening a centre in its headquarters' Swahid Nyash to help the citizens find out their names in the NRC draft.
Many AASU leaders and workers spent the night at the centre helping the citizens providing necessary information.
"We have opened this centre to help those who have moved us seeking our help. Since 8 in the morning people are making long queue in front of our office to check their names in the draft. We are helping these people," said an AASU activist.
AASU adviser Dr Samujjal Bhattacharya said they would keep helping the people to check out their names. "We have to wait for more than three decades. Finally, the first draft containing the names of 1.9 crore citizens is announced. We would keep tight vigil on the entire huge exercise to help the authorities ensure that not even a single illegal settler is allowed in the updated NRC," said Dr Bhattacharya.
Registrar General of India Sailedh and coordinator Prateek Hajela released the first draft at a press conference on Sunday midnight in Guwahati.
Hajela said 40,000 workers have been busy with the task at 2500 centres across the state for the remaining task.
