The Journal of Development Practice (JDP) published by the Department of Social Work, Assam Don Bosco University (ADBU) organized a two-day Workshop on Academic Writing at the School of Social Sciences, Azara, 17-18 March 2016.
“We planned this workshop for over a year now with an aim of developing and promoting among the participants the skill and ability for academic writing and publication,” says workshop coordinator Assistant Professor of Social Work Mr Jacob Islary.
The workshop resource person Prof. N. Jayaram from Bangalore is the Managing Editor of the Sociological Bulletin, Associate Editor of the Journal of Comparative Family Studies, was an the editor of ICSSR Journal of Reviews and Abstracts and is member on the editorial boards of several other esteemed journals in India and abroad.
He has over 140 research articles, twenty written/edited/adapted books and 300 book reviews to his credit. He also developed a style of referencing called Manual of Style (TISS, Mumbai).
The workshop focused on the structure, texture and lexicon of an academic article and targets reaching out to and strengthening the writing skills of development practitioners, academicians and scholars of Social Sciences.
“We learned the principles, ethics and the process of logical arrangement of thought involved in academic writing for publication,” said PhD scholar and Assistant Professor of Psychological Counseling Miss Neelam Bara.
Assistant Professor of Social Work Mr Victor Nazary said the workshop, “helped to build and strengthen academic writing skills and the ability to write effectively various sections of academic articles for peer-reviewed journals.”
For Assistant Professor Tania Sur of Education department the workshop helped “to become familiar with the citation and referencing styles of journals of their interest.”
Among 16 participants were Academicians, Scholars of Social Sciences and Humanities, and Development Practitioners who are interested in producing scientific papers for publication in journals and edited books.
The resource person Prof. Jayaram is a member of the Association of Third World Studies, International Network on the Role of Universities in Developing Areas, Indian Sociological Society, and Comparative Education Society of India. He was a member of the UGC Subject Panel on Sociology and a Core Member of the UGC Curriculum Development Committee.
He was also member of the National Focus Group on Problems of SC and ST Children, National Council of Educational Research and Training, New Delhi; the Committee to Review the Indian Council of Social Science Research; and the Consultative Team to prepare a Tertiary Education Policy for the Royal Government of Bhutan.
He was on the Panel to deliver the Keynote Address on ‘Sustainable Higher Education’ at The Third G8 University Summit 2010 (Canada), at Vancouver, in May 2010. He is the recipient of the Dr. Paduru Gururaja Bhat Annual Award (2012) and ET Now Education Leadership Award (2013).
He has about 35 years of academic career which include positions of Head, Centre for Research Methodology, Tata Institute of Social Sciences, Mumbai; Director, Institute for Social and Economic Change, Bangalore; and Professor of Sociology with Bangalore University, Goa University, and University of West Indies, Trinidad.
Currently based in Bengaluru Prof Jayaram is a Visiting Professor at the National Law School of India University, Bengaluru and Ambedkar University, Delhi.
