Queer Pride Guwahati

The much colorful Queer Pride Guwahati was held on Sunday with people participating the walk from all walks of the society. A street fashion show by Enlighten was also held to support the LGBTQ community. The walked started in the city from Handique Girls College, Food Villa, Nehru Park, BSNL Office, RKB Hostel and ended back in Dighalipukhuri Park entrance. 

People sang and danced to the beats of dhols and songs, and raised slogans demanding end to all forms of discrimination, violence and oppression against Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender and Queer people. The participants protested against the laws, like Section 377 which criminalises consensual sex between adults.

Bail petitions for Akhil

Two top lawyers have come out to provide legal assistance for Akhil Gogoi who was arrested on Sunday wee hours from his own rented house.Bijan Mahanjan and Bhaskar Dev konwar have agreed to conduct the cases on behalf of the KMSS president.He was arrested under Sections 306 and 102(A). These sections are non bailable. But they would formally move the court with a bail petitions.Legal experts told Assam Times that any bail under this two Sections are not possible but in the same breath, there are rare examples of bail even after arrest under these Provisions.

Shocking arrest!

Amid escalating protest against Akhil Gogoi’s arrest, various parties and organizations have alleged police excess on the KMSS leader.Several persons requesting not to be named told Assam Times that the way the KMSS leader was arrested was really shocking. They said, “Gogoi was neither a notorious criminal and nor a fraud. He could have been arrested on Saturday day time. This treatment is totally unjustified.”  

All about a Nano car

Dispur police have seized the vehicle carrying Pranab Boro to Dispur for self immolation on February 24.The red coloured Nano vehicle belonging to Nagen Pegu in Six Milke areas was seized on Saturday evening.On Sunday morning it was shifted to Panbazar police station were Akhil Gogoi along with 6 other KMSS activists are being kept.  A team of high level police officials is understood to have been grilling Gogoi and his associates in this connection.Towards the evening they would be produced before the court to seek them in police remand.All they were arrested from their residences on Sunday wee hours which runs into a hail of protest.

Akhil required for investigation

Finally police have confirmed arrest of Akhil Gogoi along with 6 other KMSS leaders.Talking to reporters in Panbazar, senior police superintendent AP Tiwary said that Gogoi was arrested in connection with a suo motto complaint by police apart from three FIRs pending against him.He said that custodial interrogation is required to unearth the truth. He would be produced before the court on Sunday evening to seek him in their remand.required for custodial investigation.         

Arrest draws sharp reaction

KMSS president Akhil Gogoi’s arrest runs into a hail of protest across the state.KMSS activists in large numbers have blocked roads and rails demanding immediate release of their leader who was arrested from his residence on Thursday wee hours.Reporters of escalating protest are pouring in from Karimganj, Nagaon, Jorhat, Sivasagar, Golaghat, Lakhimpur and Dhemaji.

High drama in Akhil arrest

A high drama took place when police and para military forces arrested Akhil Gogoi from his own residence on Thursday wee hours.As a police team led by magistrate Chinmoy Sarma reached Gogoi’s rented house in Nazarapar in Chandmari, KMSS supporters in large number thronged Chandmari and tried to prevent the arrest.Police resorted to blankfiring to disperse the KMSS supporters. Gogoi who is being kept in Panbazar police station has been arrested in two non bailable cases. He is expected to be produced before the court towards the evening.        

Akhil, 6 others arrested

Its confirm. Akhil Gogoi has been arrested. The KMSS leader along with 6 others have been picked up from their residences in the wee hours on Sunday.They were believed to have been arrested in connection with the recent self immolation case of a KMSS activist in Dispur on February 24. All they were taken to Panbazar police station to be produced before the court towards the evening.Notably, police have three cases pending against Gogoi. Dispur police alone has two cases field against him in connection with the self immolation case.  On Friday, father of Pramod Boro who died in self immolation attempt field an FIR against Gogoi in Tangla police station. 

AGP clears 8 candidates

AGP is gearing up for Lok Sabha polls amid speculations that the regional party is likely to go it alone in the upcoming polls.The party is understood to have finalized the candidates for 8 seats. Dr Arun Sarma will contest from Lakhimpur while Birendra Prasad Baishya will be AGP candidate for Guwahati.Pradeep Hazarika is candidate for Jorhat while Anup Phukan will contest from Dibrugarh. The party retains Joseph Toppo in Tezpur while Pradyut Bora will contest from Nagaon. Nurul Hussian will contest from Dhubri seat.    

Ban on tea industry

The Golaghat district administration has banned manufacturing and packing by Golden Eagle Tea industries hours after a woman died of tea poisoning on Saturday.A woman died after she consumed a cup of tea brewing trouble for a tea company.The incident took place at Aathkhelia area in the district where identified as Pramolota Saikia, fell sick along with her husband and son after sipping tea in the morning.
