Queer Pride Guwahati

The much colorful Queer Pride Guwahati was held on Sunday with people participating the walk from all walks of the society. A street fashion show by Enlighten was also held to support the LGBTQ community. The walked started in the city from Handique Girls College, Food Villa, Nehru Park, BSNL Office, RKB Hostel and ended back in Dighalipukhuri Park entrance. 

People sang and danced to the beats of dhols and songs, and raised slogans demanding end to all forms of discrimination, violence and oppression against Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender and Queer people. The participants protested against the laws, like Section 377 which criminalises consensual sex between adults.

Subba to contest independently

Former MP Manikumar Subba will contest the Lok Sabha from Tezpur in the upcoming Lok Sabha polls. But this time he will be an independent candidate.He decided to contest independently after the party picked up Bhupen Bora from this crucial seat.Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi told reporters in New Delhi on Saturday that Subba as independent candidate will have hardly any impact in Tezpur.

Terror revisits Naharjan

A reign of terror seems to have revisited Sonitpur district bordering Arunachal Pradesh.A group of miscreants from the neighbouring state stormed into a tiny hamlet at Naharjan area on Friday night and asked the local residents to quit the place early.Police was informed. But the armed fled from the spot before the arrival of police. An uneasy calm has been prevailing in the entire area since the Arunachal Pradesh miscreants shot dead at least 15 local villagers in Chauldhuwa in January.

Rocky refuses to contest

Forest minister Rockybul Hussian is averse to contest in the Lok Sabha polls from Dhubri constituency.In a letter to the party high command on Friday, Hussian said that he is not interested to contest the Lok Sabha polls.He sent his letter to the AICC after the election committee of the party shortlisted his name to contest the upcoming polls from Dhubri.His letter, however, paved the way for Wazed Ali Chaudhury to contest from this AIUDF stronghold.

BJP to finalise Assam candidates

BJP election committee meets in New Delhi on Saturday where the party is expected to finalise candidates for 14 seats in Assam.Assam state unit president Sarbananda Sonowal has already submitted the applications of the ticket aspirants before the party high command.Reliable sources told Assam Times that the party finds it difficult to finalise only 14 candidates out of 141 aspirants.The state unit heavyweights met on Friday in Guwahati. But the meeting failed to prepare any panel of candidates and left it on the party high command.   

Tension in Charaipung

Tension is simmering in Tinsukia district bordering Arunachal Pradesh on Friday after the miscreants from the neighbouring state have asked the Assamese people to quit the place.Local residents in the Charaipung areas claimed to have received quit notices on Friday. They are understood to have asked to leave their native place by the next 23 days.
