Senior most Gauhati High Court judge Justice Tinlianthang Vaiphei will take overas the Chief Justice on October 21. Assam GovernorPBAcharya will administer Vaiphei the oath of office and secrecy at a function in the Raj Bhawan on that day.
President Pranab Mukherjee appointed him to replace acting Chief Justice Kazarian Srecdhar Rao who is retiring on that day.

The Assam government would order an enquiry into the suicide by international archer Pratima Boro during the ongoing national team selection camp in Pune. A special team of Assam Police would conduct the investigations into the 22-year-old archer's death. A hopeful for the 2016 Olympics at Rio de Janerio, 23-year-old Pratima allegedly committed suicide on Friday by hanging herself from the ceiling fan in her room at the Army Sports Institute.
The first wave of floods hit the state. The worst-hit is Majuli. The water level of the river Brahmaputra has been surging following heavy rainfall. The surging waters breached a dyke at the Kharjan area where 350 hectares of cultivable land have been submerged. Floodwaters have submerged 200 hectares of cultivable land at Chilakola and another 150 hectares at Kamalabari here so far. Moreover, the Kamalabari ghat has been shifted due to the floodwaters; the water is still rising.
In yet another crackdown against syndicates, Guwahati police have arrested a businessman from the city on Sunday. Police arrested Jitu Barman from his residence in the wee hours. The former president of the fish traders association was arrested on charges of running a nefarious fish syndicate. Interrogation is in progress at Paltanbazar police station.
Sensation prevails in Bijni after security forces recovered two bombs on Sunday.The powerful bombs were seized in front of the ABSU office in the heart of Bijni township in the wee hours. But it took several hours for the bomb squad to defuse the explosion. Police investigation is in progress to nab the miscreants.
Yet another chit fund company has gone missing from Guwahati. The officials of Euro Group of officials have been remaining incommunicado for the last five days leaving the depositors in the lurch. The Kolkata based company has deposite of crores of rupees for industrial development. The Guwahati-based officials went untraced as soon as West Best-Bengal police sealed the Euro Group offices in the state.
One person died and ten others have been injured when a herd of wild elephant unleashed terror in Golaghat district on Sunday. The incident took place at Telgorom area in Numoligarh where a herd of wild elephant which came down from Kaziranga in search of food attacked the families. One person was trampled to death while ten others have been injured. Over 20 huts have been destroyed during the 3 hour long reign of terror. Later forest officials dispersed the elephants.
Three villagers died and twenty others have been injured when security forces sprang upon a group of people who prevented the PowerGrid authority from erecting a wall in Biswanath chariali on Tuesday. The incident took place at Baghmari at 5.30 in the morning when local people came out to the street opposing the wall erected secretly on Monday. Security forces opened fire at the protesters where one died on the spot and two others died on the way to the hospital. Angry mob later burnt down 4 police vehicles. Top ranked police and civil officials have arrived in the spot to contain the situation.
An unclaimed explosion has again proved the futility of the heavy presence of security forces. That too just near the Chandmari police station. The explosion took place on Monday evening with a huge sound. There was no report of any casualty. Police claimed to have found some local explosive in the bomb. No one has so far been arrested. Police havenot denied ULFA's hand in it to make presence felt. Investigation is on.
A CBI team is set to land in Guwahati on Tuesday to take up the allegations against a few chit fund companies. The team would properly screen the cases in consultation with the CID officials and only a few critical cases would be taken up for investigation. CBI agreed to probe a few cases against Saradha group, Rose Valley, Jeevan Surakshya who have looted crores of rupees by chit fund.
Curfew has been imposed in Malaipathar in Goalpara district amid tension after two persons were killed this morning when the police opened fire to control a 3000-strong mob on the rampage.Seven protesters have been injured in the firing. Eight cops are also hurt. Police had to open fire to control a crowd that went berserk after the body of a 50-year-old cowherd, who was missing since Sunday, was found this morning in the Mailapathar area.
