Vaiphei new Gauhati HC Chief Justice

Senior most Gauhati High Court judge Justice Tinlianthang Vaiphei will take over as the Chief Justice on October 21. Assam Governor PB Acharya will administer Vaiphei the oath of office and secrecy at a function in the Raj Bhawan on that day.

President Pranab Mukherjee appointed him to replace acting Chief Justice Kazarian Srecdhar Rao who is retiring on that day.

In yet another incident of human-elephant conflict, two persons lost their lives in the Goalpara district of Assam today. Bhaturam Rabha (45) and Mithun Mallick (22) had been trampled by wild pachyderm at Govindpur in Rangagara. Residents say that the two were trampled by a loner elephant. Creating more fear among the COVID-19 panic-stricken people, an earthquake measuring 6.4 magnitude on Richter Scale shook Assam and some parts of the NE India today morning. The tremor was felt at 7.52am followed by atleast two aftershocks.  No major loss is reported so far. As per the National Center for Seismology under the Ministry of Earthscience, the magnitude of the earthquake was 6.4 on Richter Scale. “It was really a big”, said Dr. Geeta Dutta, in her facebook post. The epicenter of the massive quake was in the Sonitpur district,Assam at the depth of 10 km. In Guwahati, people hurriedly moved out from their houses after feeling the tremor.
Security forces have rescued two abducted ONGC officials from Nagaland last night.  Sources revealed that the officials were rescued in a joint operation carried out by the Indian Army and Assam Rifles in a populas area of the Mon district. The outlawed ULFA(I) has kidnapped three ONGC officials from the Lakuwa rig. Among the three two were rescued, security forces claimed. The rescued officials are identified as Alakesh Saikia and Moni Mohan Gogoi. Security Forces also recovered an AK 47 rifle during the operation.
