A special court in Guwahati jailed a DRDA project director on a bribery charge on Thursday. The ACS daughter of former Bihar and Tripura governor was caught red handed by the vigilance and anti corruption department when she took bribe from an NGO worker for releasing fund for a road work in the city.
According to information, the department held her inside her office chamber after she accepted Rs 12,000 as bribe from Purna Chetry who works with Durga Sarovar Unnayan Samity.
Earlier she demanded money from the NGO for releasing the remaining amount for a road construction project. Then the NGO officials lodged the complaint with the department who laid the trap on Thursday.
On receiving the currency notes coated with a chemical, the vigilance officials asked her to wash the hands with water where her hands turned red because of the presence of the chemical on her palm. This was the best way to prove that the bribery allegations are correct.

Stern action awaits fake financial institutions. Disclosing this in the Assam assembly on Thursday, Parliamentary Affairs Minister Nilomoni Sen Deka said that as of March 6, 2013, a total of 192 cases had been filed against 117 such companies. He said that police have also seized 106 bank accounts and Rs 93.81 lakh. He said that this was apart from seizure of property worth Rs 24.28 crore and six bighas of land have also been seized from fake financial companies.
Dispur is ready to appoint 12,000 more teachers in the state. Education minister Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma told reporters on Wednesday that a list of 12000 teachers of high schools in 22 districts would be available at 12 noon on Thursday. After one week, the appointment orders would be sent to the TET successful candidates to enable them to join in mid-April.
The recovery of a body creates no less tension in Dispur on Wednesday. Identified as Tinku Singh the Assam Sachivalay employee was missing from April 1. A truck driver was killed and five others have been injured when two trucks collided heads on in the out skirt of Guwahati on Wednesday. The mishap took place at Sarutezpur at around 7.30 where a truck carrying sand collided its head on another truck. Kamrup district administration on Monday prohibited the sale of Assamese attires made of genuine Assam Silk and imported Benarasi silk in the same shop from Monday in the district.The order was notified by Deputy Commissioner S K Roy under Section 144 of the CrPC. The silk clothes would have to be sold in separate shops with signboards clearly stating which variety was being stocked.For protection of the local silk industry, the administration would also search for artificial silk clothes. The process for trade-marking the Sualkuchi silk would also be initiated.
