Veteran author passes away

Veteran author and educationist Jiban Krishna Patra passed away leaving a pall of gloom in the entire Barpeta district on Tuesday. The end came in the morning at a local hospital where he was undergoing treatment.

He was 80. Patra, who came to Assam in the Sixtieth authored many books when he was working as a professor of a college.

Various parties, organizations and individuals have condoled the death of the veteran author and paid their last respect to Patra.

Good news for people of Sarupeta. Courtesy the Northeast Frontier Railway. From now and onwards, the Sarupeta station will be the regular stop for the Kamakhya-Alipurduar Intercity Express. The decision was taken in view of the long standing demands of the local residents. JINTUL TALUKDAR, BARPETA: Minority students are angry with the chief minister Tarun Gogoi who dropped border development minister Siddique Ahmed on Tuesday. Hundreds of the students hailing from the minority communities on Wednesday burnt the effigy of Tarun Gogoi at Kalgasia in Barpeta district for Siddique’s exclusion. Talking to Assam, the protestors said that Gogoi has insulted the minority communities by replacing Ahmed who has been making no less contribution for the uplift of the communities. Amid simmering dissidence within the Congress Legislative party, a senior party leader has slammed a section of ministers and MLAs for demanding removal of Tarun Gogoi as chief minister saying that the party won’t allow them to do it. Security forces recovered the body of Abu Bakar Siddique in Barpeta on Saturday evening 24 hours after the lemon trader was kidnapped by gunmen along with three others in Baksa district. In a bizarre incident that sends shocwaves across the state, a villager lost his life at the hands of his wife and son in Barpeta district on Thursday. The incident was beleived to have taken place at Kaharpara vlage in Niyananda area where 55 year old Kalicharan Kalita was beaten up to death by his wife Lalita Kalita and son Montu.
