Despite a simmering situation along the Assam-Meghalaya border, Assam health minister Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma has laid the foundation stone a Primary health centre at Langpih, a place in Kamrup district which is claimed by Meghalaya. The neighbouring state decided to maintain a wait and watch policy helping the area avoid a major clash.
Dr Sarma on Saturday along with his forest department counterpart Rockybul Hussain, AGP MLA Jyoti Prasad Das, youth Congress leader Rekibuddin Ahmed, Kamrup deputy Commissioner R C Jain, police superintendent Debojit Hazarika did it and not only that Dr Sarma announced a Rs 12 crore package for the development of the almost inaccessible area.
In his address, the minister said if the neighbouring state has any objection they should approach the judiciary and should not disturb others in implementing anything with its territory. A stunned Meghalaya Government has decide to maintain a wait-and-watch policey and this a major showdown was averted. Notably, the ministers’ convoy found it difficult to clear the road to Lengpih as it has some logs and uprooted trees placed to prevent the visit.
Notably, tension started running in the area as soon as the Assam Government announced a date for laying the foundation stone of a health centre in the backward area. A local organisation in Meghalaya was quick to greet health minister Dr Sarma with a 36 hour bandh and pledged to prevent him from doing it. The Donkuper Roy Government also joined the cry and sought the Centre’s intervention.

Noted sports organizer and senior Congress leader Phani Sarma breathed his last at his own residence at Bamunimaidam here at 7.15 a.m. today. He was 76.He was the treasurer of ruling Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) and also involved with many other socio-cultural organizations of the State. Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi and Assam Congress president Bhubaneswar Kalita deeply mourned the death of Sarma and said that the state had lost a dedicated sports organizer at his death. Sibasagar police has arrested four individual for alleged links with ULFA. Among them three individuals are from Sibasagar and one from Moran. The individuals have been arrested for assisting in collection and supplying huge amount of money to ULFA. Guwahati: In yet another ‘handiwork,’ ULFA explodes a powerful bomb in the busy Machkhowa areas on Saturday morning at around 7-30 which left four people dead and more than twenty injured.The blast that rocks again in the time of the grand Ambubachi mela atop Kamakhya and Asian Athletic Grand Prix at Sarusajai, took place in front of a mosque. Guwahati: A powerful bomb that explodes in the city on Saturday morning leaves four people dead besides more than twenty injured.he explosion took place at Machkhowa and that too in front of a mosque at a daily vegetable market at around 7-30 am. All those killed in the explosion are pedestrians.Immediately after the explosion, top ranked police and civil administration officials arrived in the spot and investigation is going on.The injured were admitted to the nearby hospital.No one has so far been rounded up in the city.
