In a big development in the state’s political arena, Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma joined BJP.

The power former minister in the Tarun Gogoi cabinet formally joined the saffron party after his initial meeting with BJP president Amit Shah in New Delhi on Sunday.

Three mysterious explosions struck panic in Chandmari areas in Guwahati on Friday evening.The explosions took place at the irrigation colony in the city at around 8 in the evening spreading panic among the local residents.Eyewitnesses told Assam Times that they came to hear the sounds of three explosions with 30 minutes. Then they came to see fire sparks and smokes from three drains inside the colony.There is no casualty in the explosions. But a section of the panic stricken people in the colony think it an attempt to blow up the colony buildings.   
The hawker-agent impasse in Guwahati has knocked the doors of judiciary where trouble seems to have brewed for the hawkers.Amid an attempt to end the impasse, the court on Friday called the strike an illegal under the Industrial Dispute Act which is why, the agents are set to recruit fresh hawkers from Saturday.Notably, the hawkers have not been working in Guwahati for the last 5 days demanding hike in their commission amount from the existing 28 per cent to 35 per cent.         
A circle of Congress legislators have been camping to blacken the poll prospect of MP Ranee Narah amid specualtions of resurfacing dissidence in Congress legislative body.Legislators Balin Chetia, Abu Taher Bepari along with a few others have arrived in New Delhi on Friday. They are set to meet the powerful AICC leaders to prevent the Union minister from getting ticket for upcoming Lok Sabha polls this time.They are believed to have been trying to target a few other close associates of Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi.     
Despite strict vigil, Guwahati runs the risk of witnessing more trouble when the city is teeming with a section militants who can foment trouble at any moment.City police have arrested a Prepak militant on Friday evening and seized from incriminating documents from his possession.  
Security forces claimed to have arrested a hardcore NDFB(S) militant in Barpeta district on Friday.The militant was captured during a combing operation by police and CRPF at Pathsala in the evening. An AK-47 rifle along with some incriminating materials were recovered from him.   
KMSS is up in arms against the Tarun Gogoi government alleging defective land patta distribution in Guwahati slated for February 24.The peasant body has made it clear that they would go all out against the Rahul Gandhi’s two days trip to Assam if the government fails to clear the land pattas for all the genuine beneficiaries by February 24.The reaction came after revenue minister Prithvi Majhi said that out of 62,000, only 500 people are set to get land pattas in Guwahati.          
Bodoland demand seems to have sharpened when NDFB(P), ABSU and BNC mounted pressure on the Centre to create Bodoland in the line of the Telengana state.In a series of tripartite talks the Bodo organizations categorically told reporters in New Delhi on Friday that they won’t rest until and unless the separate Bodoland is created.The tripartite meeting, however, resolve to end the problem by talks.     
Amid simmering crisis, the Asom Gana Parishad held its executive committee meeting on Friday in Guwahati to discuss the Lok Sabha poll.Presided over by Prafulla Kumar Mahanta, the failed to arrive at a consensus on the upcoming general election. Former president Chandra Mohan Patowary, who is set to join BJP, was conspicuous by his absence.Several other disappointed top leaders came out of the meeting. The regional party is scheduled to prepare the list of candidates on Saturday.
The ministerial group set up to study the formation of new districts and sub division discussed the entire subject at a meeting in Dispur on Friday.The meeting thoroughly discussed the proposals for creation of ten new districts and 46 sub divisions in the state.   
A hostage managed to escape from the NDFB-S camp in Bhutan 19 days after he was kidnapped from Kokrajhar.According to information, the local resident of Lilabari in Lakhimpur was kidnapped on February 5 when he was on a visit to Kokrajhar with one of him friend.After holding him hostage, the Bodo militant outfit demanded Rs 1 crore for his release. The family members, however, could not pay the ransom. But under mysterious circumstances, he managed to escape from the captivity.
