In a big development in the state’s political arena, Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma joined BJP.

The power former minister in the Tarun Gogoi cabinet formally joined the saffron party after his initial meeting with BJP president Amit Shah in New Delhi on Sunday.

In a major setback for the Congress, which has been struggling hard to regain strength since 2014, has today lost two of its prominent faces in Assam. Sitting MLA of Badarpur, Jamaluddin Ahmed and former MLA of Dergaon Aroti Kachari Hazarika passed away. The Dergaon politican was 59. The two leaders' deaths were mourned by many including APCC president Ripun Bora, former minister Bismita Gogoi, among others.
Noted Assamese linguist and former Cotton College professor Dr. Ramesh Pathak is no more. The professor has passed away today after a brief illness. His death is mourned by many. Born in Tihu, Nalbari Dr. Pathak has made tremendous contribution in the field of the Assamese linguistic by penning a number of books. A few years ago, he was bestowed with the Sahityacharrya Award by the Asam Sahitya Sabha.

Guwahati : In a first, AASU leadership has reined in Samujjal Bhattacharya saying that the yet to be inducted adviser is not competent to make any statement on behalf of the state's influential student body. Celebrated Assamese dramatist Sewabrat Baruah is no more. One of the finest dramatists of the contemporary era, Baruah passed away last night after a prolonged illness. A Dimapur-Guwahati bus has, on Saturday, met with an accident at Golaghat. As per reports the bus while heading to Dimapur accidentally veered off the main road in the wee hours at Garampani. Fortunately, all passengers were safely rescued. The driver and the handiman of the bus ran away after the accident, sources said.
