Tai Ahom, Koch Rajbanshi, Moran, Mutocks along with two others are likely to get ST status.
The good news for the six communities has come from the Centre when the six ethnic communityleaders hunkered down with Union tribal affairs minister Juel Ornam in New Delhi on Thursday.
Flanked by sports minister Sarbabanda Sonowal, Ornam said the Centre will have to change the modalities in the soon to be held cabinet meeting.
After the seal of approval from the cabinet, the modalities would be ready. It would take two or three months to complete the entire proceedings.
Later the delegation talked to union home minister Rajnath Singh at his official residence.
The move assumed significance despite the escalating protest of the existing ST people.

The other two are tea tribes and Sutiya not chutia. Ahom , Koch and Sutiya were ruling class of Assam during medievel period. Next time please name the ''other two'' as sentiments are related to it.
One horn terror revisits Bokakhat. A rhino strayed away from the Kaziranga unleashed no less terror in the outskirt of the National park.Local residents in Kanutika spotted the animal while it attacked a local villager.Identified as Sanjay Santhal, the villager has been rushed to the hospital. Forest officials are guarding the animal and have been trying to push it back to Kaziranga.

Properties worth one crore have been reduced to ashes when a devastating fire engulfed a lodged in Guwahati on Monday.The incident took place at 2 in the afternoon in Birubari because of a cylinder explosion. Chief minister Tarun Gogoi on Monday slammed Narendra Modi alleging BJP was expert in packaging and marketing.Releasing the white paper on the central assistance to the state during the UPA and NDA governments at the Centre, Gogoi said that the state received only 13,000 crore from the centre during the NDA government at the Centre.He said that amount of central assistant during the UPA government is Rs 24,000 crore.
