Lahkar turns 85

Achyut Lahkar is 85 years old on Thursday. Various local organizations and individuals in Pathsala area on Thursday greeted the mobile theatre pioneer on his 85th birth day.
AASU, AJYCP, Pathsala town committee felicitated Lahkar at a brief function organized at the Pathsala Press Club on Thursday to mark the occasion.
The Assam government has yet to assist the ailing theatre personality. However, APCC local leader Sailen Kalita also met him on the occasion.

What ails Barpeta jute cultivators

 All is not well for Sarbesh Ali. Jute cultivation will no longer be his staple source of livelihood. Same fate awaits Mofesh Ali. He won’t be able to reap rich harvest this year. NIA holds Gaonburah, 5 others

NIA probing the Burdwan bombing case has arrested 6 more villagers from Barpeta on Wednesday a day before the investigating team left for Bangladesh. All these villagers including a woman were picked up from from Chatala village.Five of these villagers including the Chatala village gaonburah are being kept at the NIA regional office in Guwahati for intense grilling. Burdwan case: NIA raids Sahanur’s room

Ajmal effigy burnt in Bhawanipur

Protest continues to hit the state against Badaruddin Amal’s alleged link with the jehadi elements after a satellite TV channel broke the story quoting an intelligence report. At least 100 BJP activists burnt the effigy of the AIUDF president at Bhawanipur on Thursday evening demanding action against Ajmal who allegedly has been sending a section of youths in Dhubri to Bangladesh to undergo jehadi training. Apart from burning the effigy, the protesters shouting slogans demanding stern action against Ajmal a day after he straightly denied the charges and promised to sue the satellite channel.

Mobile tower that triggers trouble

Its all about a mobile tower that triggers trouble in a huge area of Barpeta district forcing the people to go all out against AirTel. Local residents in Bhawanipur start complaining a number of health problems a couple of months after the mobile service provider installed a tower near a school allegedly violating the laid down rules. “Several persons in our area have complains of ear and eye problems. Our people had no such problems before AirTel had set up the mobile tower. The complaints before the doctor are common. Youth slips from train, dies

Yet another incident sends shockwaves in Barpeta district where a youth died after he slipped from a moving train on Saturday. The incident took place when the youth was travelling on the North East Express and as the train arrived in Dayaguri in Barpeta district he suddenly fell on the ground to be crushed by the train.  

Explosives found in Bhawanipur

Security forces on Saturday claimed to have recovered some explosives in Bhawanipur a week ahead of the Independence Day. Explosives including detonators, ammunitions and live bullets were recovered during a combing operation in the entire in view of the independence day.       //

Car lifters in police station premises!

Four persons were caught red handed when they were trying to lift a truck. That too from the Pathsala police station premises on Saturday. According to sources, identified as Rafikul Islam, Safikul Islam, Nanda Das and Rafikul Islam, they stormed into the police station campus in the wee hours to lift a truck seized by police last week. Policemen guarding outside arrested them. Interrogation is going on where police got wind of an international gang of car lifters.     /

Maoist extremists held in Nalbari

Nalbari police have arrested four dreaded Maoist extremists and seized two powerful grenades from their possession on Thursday. Acting on a tip off that a gang of Maoist extremists hailing from Jharkhand has been camping in Koithalkuchi area, police conducted a raid at a house where they were captured. They were believed to have been camping there to strike in the run up to the Independence Day celebrations. Two powerful hand grenades were also seized from their possession. Later, top ranked police officials brought them to an undscosed location for interrogation. Some stunning revelations are believed to have come out in their confessional statement. /

Sex racket busted in Bhawanipur

Bhawanipur police busted a sex racket after the arrest of four people on Monday. Local residents in Bhawanipur Daxinhati told Assam Times that acting on their complaints, police raided the residence of Mrinal Talukdar on Monday midnight where they found a youth along with two girls. According to allegations, Talukdar and his wife have been running the sex racket for the last couple of months forcing them to move police for action.
