3 held for witch-hunting

Police arrested three persons in witch-hunt related case in remote  Mainaopur village under Bishmuri police outpost in  Kokrajhar district.

According to police, some people in the village caught and tied Bishor Brahma (50) with a rope and took him to a local school in the village when had gone to his village Mainaopur, where his family lives and physically assaulted him.

Police said Bishor Brahma was forced out of the village 4 years back after accusing him of practising black magic. He has been living in Kokrajhar all these years, though his family continues to live in the village.

Yesterday he had gone to his village home for some personnel work when he was caught and tied at the school compound with a rope for returning to his village.

Police said they got information about the incident and acted promptly and rescued the person around 10.45 pm last night .

Police said three persons - Raju Basumatary, Rabha Brahma and Karuna Basumatary, were arrested and were forwarded to judicial custody.  

The family member have filed FIR with the police today.

It is to be mention that despite various organsiations and govt trying to eridict the social evil,  witch-hunting continues to hunts in many parts of the state claiming may lives. It is to be mention that the Assam government recently submitted an anti-witch hunt draft legislation to check the menace. The anti-witchhunt draft bill proposes punishment from three years to life imprisonment.

Three people are believed to have been killed in the name of witch-hunting in Kokrajhar.The incident took place on Thursday in Mongoljhar where the three people including a woman have been remaining untraced for the last 48 hours.Acting on the complaints, police have picked up 11 villagers on Saturday morning.
