Assamese travel fiction released

It was a homely meeting organized at Guwahati Press Club that witnessed the release of a travel fiction titled Ontarior Seuj Dalisat (Over Green Carpet of Ontario) and penned by Dr Jagadindra Raychoudhury in presence of several senior journalists. Inaugurating the book, Swapnaneel Barua, a scholar and also a senior bureaucrat of Assam, pointed out that the writer not only documented various events related to his visit to Canada, but also painted a humanist reminiscence with his created characters.

The function, held on 1 July 2015, was also addressed by senior journalists like Hiten Mahanta, Rupam Barua, PJ Barua, Mukul Kalita, Ranen Kumar Goswami, Nava Thakuria and Pramod Kalita. Moderated by journalist Sabita Lahkar, the meeting was graced by acclaimed story writer Jyotish Sikder, professors Anup Talukder & Nirmali Medhi, singers Anindita Choudhury & Kishor Giri and Bitopan & Sneha. A prolific writer, Dr Raychoudhury is an associate professor of B Barua College, Guwahati and contributor to various Assam based newspapers and magazines. A smiling personality Dr Raychoudhury is also a regular participant in various radio programs and television talk shows. Published by Basundhara publication of Hatigaon in Guwahati, the book has 192 pages with a nice cover designed by prominent artist Padma Singha. It is priced at Rs 250/- per copy.

Police team probing the chit fund scam continues to grill Candan Das a day after the Jeevan Surakhsa boss was brought to Guwahati.Das is facing a number of cases n Guwahati and many other parts of the state. The owner of a chit fund company was arrested from Barasaton Tuesday night on charges of swindling investors' money. Das along with his wife Sangeeta Das were held in a joint raid conducted by officials of CID and that of Barasat police station.
Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on Wednesday filed his nomination for a fifth consecutive term in the Rajya Sabha from Assam even as he draws media ire for refusing to speak to the waiting reporters in Dispur. President Pranab Mukherjee exhorted varsities to meet the requirements of moral challenges faced by society amid rising crimes against women.In his speech at the Convocation ceremony of Assam University in Silchar, Mukherjee expressed serious concerns over the inadequacies in the education sector.According to the President,“it underscores the need for society to introspect and find ways to arrest the moral decline."He said,” "if our country has to continue on its path of higher growth, then the relentless pursuit of higher educational standards is an indispensable requirement for its achievement."
The United Liberation Front of Asom has strongly criticized Sankadev Award for Sharmila Tagore a day after the film personality received the coveted award from president Pranab Mukherjee.In an e-mail statement, the banned insurgent outfit alleged that Tagore has hardly any contribution to Assamese language literature. According to ULFA, it has belittled the saint. ULFA further asked Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi to explain the reasons for selecting Tagore’s name and to made the names of the panel members public.

Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi on Monday ordered immediate steps to mitigate the woes of the Guwahati citizens in view of the flash floods causing major inconvenience in the city.Stung by open criticism, Gogoi held an emergent meeting with Guwahati Development Department Minister Ajanta Neog and GMDA Chairman Capt Robin Bordoloi and asked them to step in with measures to deal with artificial floods.He further suggested an expert committee to enable the Government to formulate a comprehensive policy to tackle the water woes.

Basistha police have seized explosives on Sunday hours before Pranab Mukherjee’s visit on Sunday.  These include some gelatin sticks, electric detonators seized during an intensified operation in the evening.
