It was a homely meeting organized at Guwahati Press Club that witnessed the release of a travel fiction titled Ontarior Seuj Dalisat (Over Green Carpet of Ontario) and penned by Dr Jagadindra Raychoudhury in presence of several senior journalists. Inaugurating the book, Swapnaneel Barua, a scholar and also a senior bureaucrat of Assam, pointed out that the writer not only documented various events related to his visit to Canada, but also painted a humanist reminiscence with his created characters.
The function, held on 1 July 2015, was also addressed by senior journalists like Hiten Mahanta, Rupam Barua, PJ Barua, Mukul Kalita, Ranen Kumar Goswami, Nava Thakuria and Pramod Kalita. Moderated by journalist Sabita Lahkar, the meeting was graced by acclaimed story writer Jyotish Sikder, professors Anup Talukder & Nirmali Medhi, singers Anindita Choudhury & Kishor Giri and Bitopan & Sneha. A prolific writer, Dr Raychoudhury is an associate professor of B Barua College, Guwahati and contributor to various Assam based newspapers and magazines. A smiling personality Dr Raychoudhury is also a regular participant in various radio programs and television talk shows. Published by Basundhara publication of Hatigaon in Guwahati, the book has 192 pages with a nice cover designed by prominent artist Padma Singha. It is priced at Rs 250/- per copy.

A local court in Kolkata on Wednesday remanded Sadananda Gogoi to CBI custody till Sep 20 five days after the country’s top investigating agency arrested the popular singer in connection with the Saradha scam.CBI produced Gogoi in Alipur Court in the afternoon urging extension of the custody for three more days to which the court agreed.CBI arrested Gogoi on September 12 after several hours of questioning on the scam and his role. Then the court remanded him to their custody for five days. Gogoi was arrested Sep 12 by the Central Bureau of Investigation for alleged conspiracy and misappropriation of funds.
A court in Guwahati on Wednesday remanded Anjali Das Thakuria to judicial custody two days after the assistant with the regional passport office in Guwahati was arrested by CBI on bribery charge. The court sent her to jail when CBI produced her following the end of 24 hour custody. The personal assistant of the regional passport office was held inside her office for accepting Rs 2000 bribe for clearing a pending file.
DIBYAJYOTI BORTHAKUR, RAHA: At least ten people sustained injury when a vehicle carrying them collided its head on an ambulance in Raha on Wednesday. The incident took place at Raha Chariali on the National Highway No 37 in the afternoon when a Tata Magic vehicle was on the way to Chapormukh from Nagaon while the ambulance was bound for Nagaon from Guwahati. Local residents and police rescued the passengers from the mangled vehicle. All the injured are undergoing treatment at the Nagaon Civil Hospital. It took place three days after a popular guitarist died at a tragic road mishap at a stone’s throw distance from the spot.
Former director general of police Shankar Baruah committed suicide on Wednesday. Baruah came home and within half an hour he went to the terrace and shot himself with his pistol revolver. Then he was immediately rushed to a nearby hospital at around 12 noon. But only to be declared brought dead there.He was admitted to Down Town hospital last week after he complained of heart problems and was released from there on Wednesday morning. Finally, the Assam government has started decentralizing the police force. The Superintendents are free to transfer inspectors or lower-ranked officials without any permission from the DGP.According to official sources, Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi on Tuesday has given final seal of approval. Now the SPs are competent to transfer police officials in the rank of Inspector and below within their district limits.Earlier, the DGP's prior approval was required before transfer of such officials. The DGP's approval has to be obtained in case any such officers having not completed two years in their place of posting.

The railway minister on Tuesday confirmed that the Bogibeel project would be completed by 2016.Gowda announced a huge Rs 54,000 crore package to uplift the region’s railway connectivity. Addressing a press conference in Guwahati, Gowda said that Assam alone would get Rs 5,400 crore to improve and expand railway network. After reviewing the railway projects, he said that Assam will get seven new trains very soon.
