It was a homely meeting organized at Guwahati Press Club that witnessed the release of a travel fiction titled Ontarior Seuj Dalisat (Over Green Carpet of Ontario) and penned by Dr Jagadindra Raychoudhury in presence of several senior journalists. Inaugurating the book, Swapnaneel Barua, a scholar and also a senior bureaucrat of Assam, pointed out that the writer not only documented various events related to his visit to Canada, but also painted a humanist reminiscence with his created characters.

The function, held on 1 July 2015, was also addressed by senior journalists like Hiten Mahanta, Rupam Barua, PJ Barua, Mukul Kalita, Ranen Kumar Goswami, Nava Thakuria and Pramod Kalita. Moderated by journalist Sabita Lahkar, the meeting was graced by acclaimed story writer Jyotish Sikder, professors Anup Talukder & Nirmali Medhi, singers Anindita Choudhury & Kishor Giri and Bitopan & Sneha. A prolific writer, Dr Raychoudhury is an associate professor of B Barua College, Guwahati and contributor to various Assam based newspapers and magazines. A smiling personality Dr Raychoudhury is also a regular participant in various radio programs and television talk shows. Published by Basundhara publication of Hatigaon in Guwahati, the book has 192 pages with a nice cover designed by prominent artist Padma Singha. It is priced at Rs 250/- per copy.

we know or have read many travel related books but "Ontario'r heuj dolisat" is not only a travel experience but is a travel fiction..A great experience as you keep on reading this book and gain new knowledge & issues..we expect many new books from him and wish him success..

Carnage: NIA steps in

Book release: Sonali Maasor Din

Sonali Maasor Din, a short story compilation  by Kapil Thakur was inaugurated by Col. Manoranjan Goswami at the ongoing 28th Guwahati Book Fair on Thursday. The book is a compilation of 23 short stories written over time. Present during the book release among others were, author Riju Hazarika, Rajen Sarma, publisher Chandra Prakash.

CM stresses development

Chief minister Tarun Gogoi said on Thursday that his government would spare no pain this year for the welfare of the people. Talking to reporters in Guwahati, Gogoisaud that overall development of the state is his priority and would stay.Gogoi further wished the people a happy new year. 

Poachers killed in Kaziranga

Forest guards killed two poachers in Kaziranga at an encounter on Thursday a day after a home guard and a full grown rhinoceros were killed in Orang national sanctuary.Thursday’s incident took place in the Bagori Range area of the National Park in the wee hours. Officials told Assam Times that the gun fight erupted when forest guards were searching a group of five poachers who were looking for rhino to strike. Two died on the spot. But three others were believed to have escaped.   

Normalcy in Kokrajhar, Sonitpur

Normalcy is back to Kokrajhar, Sonitpur, Chirang and Udalguri district a week after the Adivasi carnage and incidents of retaliatory attacks. Official sources told Assam Times that refugees in large number in the trouble torn districts start leaving for their homes.As on Wednesday, the number of refugees have decreased to 2.7 lakhs. Altogether 2,70,370 persons have yet to leave 91 relief camps in Kokrajhar, Sonitpur, Chirang and Udalguri districts. More refugees are expected to leave the camps on Thursday. At present, over 2.22 lakh people are staying at 91 relief camps in Kokrajhar. It is followed by Chirang, where nearly 34,000 people are staying in 25 camps. The authorities are...

Poachers kill guard, rhino

Poachers have killed a rhinoceros and a forest guard at an encounter at the Rajiv Gandhi national park on Wednesday. The encounter took place early in the morning where four poachers faced the forest guard after they killed a full grown rhino.Identified as Sushil Seal, he was a home guard who was killed during the cross fire between the poachers and the forest guard.   A Mk 1 .303 rifle, one pistol and cartridges have also been recovered from the spot.

Himachal thrash Assam in Ranji clash

Himachal Pradesh thrashed Assam riding piggyback on pacer Rishi Dhawan wonderful show in the Ranji Trophy cricket match on the fourth and final day on Wednesday.The pacer grabbed five wickets to help Himachal Pradesh crush Assam by 133 runs. Dhawan (5/53) ran through the Assam batting line-up as the home team were skittled out for just 198 in 79.5 overs after being forced to follow on at the Barsapara Cricket Stadium.Tarjinder Singh fought a lone battle with a 212-ball 90 which he made with the help of 13 boundaries for Assam. Assam had scored 218 all out in their first innings in reply to 549 for four declared by HP.

Verghese is no more, cremation today

B G Verghese is no more. The award winning author and veteran journalist died at his own residence in Gurgaon on Tuesday evening. He was 87. The relentless crusader for the underprivileged is a famous figure for Assam. He is known for his immense contribution for the entire north eastern region. Various organizations and individuals have condoled his death in Assam. His body would be cremated at the Lodi Road Crematorium on Thursday.  

Carnage toll goes up

The toll in the cycle of violence has reached 80 with the recovery yet another body in Kokrajhar on Tuesday. Identified as Som Murmu, the Adivasi man was believed to have been killed by NDFB-S whose body was recovered from Ultapani Santipur village under Bishmuri police outpost.The body was found in a decomposed state who was believed to have been killed on December 23 at Santipur.
