It was a homely meeting organized at Guwahati Press Club that witnessed the release of a travel fiction titled Ontarior Seuj Dalisat (Over Green Carpet of Ontario) and penned by Dr Jagadindra Raychoudhury in presence of several senior journalists. Inaugurating the book, Swapnaneel Barua, a scholar and also a senior bureaucrat of Assam, pointed out that the writer not only documented various events related to his visit to Canada, but also painted a humanist reminiscence with his created characters.

The function, held on 1 July 2015, was also addressed by senior journalists like Hiten Mahanta, Rupam Barua, PJ Barua, Mukul Kalita, Ranen Kumar Goswami, Nava Thakuria and Pramod Kalita. Moderated by journalist Sabita Lahkar, the meeting was graced by acclaimed story writer Jyotish Sikder, professors Anup Talukder & Nirmali Medhi, singers Anindita Choudhury & Kishor Giri and Bitopan & Sneha. A prolific writer, Dr Raychoudhury is an associate professor of B Barua College, Guwahati and contributor to various Assam based newspapers and magazines. A smiling personality Dr Raychoudhury is also a regular participant in various radio programs and television talk shows. Published by Basundhara publication of Hatigaon in Guwahati, the book has 192 pages with a nice cover designed by prominent artist Padma Singha. It is priced at Rs 250/- per copy.

we know or have read many travel related books but "Ontario'r heuj dolisat" is not only a travel experience but is a travel fiction..A great experience as you keep on reading this book and gain new knowledge & issues..we expect many new books from him and wish him success..

Poachers killed in Kaziranga

Forest guards in Kaziranga have killed two poachers at an encounter on Saturday a day after yet another rhino was killed in the world heritage site.The encounter took place in the morning when the guards were launching an intensified operation in search of the rhino poachers in the national park.  Two poachers were killed on the spot where two others managed to escape. Operations are going on to nab the remaining two.The poachers killed a female adult rhino on Friday to take away the horn in the National Park.The carcass was found at the Borboribil forest camp by the patrolling forest guards. The security forces seized five empty cartridges from the spot, he said.

Uneasy calm in Dokmoka

Uneasy calm prevails in Dokmoka a day after over 12 people sustained injury as they clashed with security forces during a protest over a rape case.Angry local residents in the entire area have pledged to take on the security forces in a big way. Talking to Assam Times the local residents said that they won’t stop the fight against the rapist army jawan.“We will not relent unless the rapist jawan is punished. Or we will ask the authority to hand over him to us,” said a local resident who was among those who hit the streets on Friday.The incident took place on April 6 when a few security personnel raped a local girl during an operation at Parkup Pahar under Dokmoka Police Station.

Paralyzing bandh in Karbi Anglong

Normal life comes to a grinding halt in Karbi Anglong district from Saturday morning following the 24 hour district bandh demanding action against the rapist security personnel.Roads are wearing a desert look. Schools and colleges, shops and markets, banks and offices are remaining closed under the impact of the bandh that began at 5 in the morning.The bandh is peaceful so far and there is no report of any untoward incident during the bandh. Altogether 11 local organizations in the hills district called the bandh demanding immediate arrest and punishment to the army personnel involved in the rape incident.

NE CMs oppose funding pattern

The north eastern Chief Ministers are dead opposed to the idea of discontinuing the system of Special Category States.The discontent came to light when the chief ministers from the region addressed the 64th North Eastern Council Plenary session in the capital on Friday. In his address Tripura Chief Minister Manik Sarkar lodged a protest over the decision to be followed by other Chief Ministers from the region. All they disappointment over the termination of the Special Category State Status.Assam chief minister Tarun Gogoi was conspicuous by his absence.

Rape again by army men!

Several local residents in Dokmoka area sustained injury when security forces sprang upon a group of people who clashed on Friday with policemen over a rape incident.The incident took place in the afternoon when police resorted to blank fire to disperse the angry mob which pelted stones at the Dokmoka-base Army camp demanding action against a few rape accused army personnel.

Rumi Nath’s arrest imminent

Rumi Nath’s arrest seems imminent when the Guwahati High Court refused anticipatory bail plea for the Karimganj MLA on Friday in connection with a case of car lifting where her estrange husband and escort have been arrested.A division bench of the court on Friday turned down her anticipatory bail plea she moved two days back. Jacky Zarir, her estrange is already in police custody along with a PSO for their alleged nexus with international car lifer Anil Chauhan.   

Gogoi gets govt bunglow in Delhi

The Delhi government has allotted a bungalow to Assam chief minister Tarun Gogoi.Government officials told Assam Times in Delhi on Friday that the Cabinet Committee on Accommodation (CCA) formally allotted the bunglow on Thursday evening. Gogoi has been allotted a C-1 type house.  Gogoi was further given exemption since the state bhawan is under construction. 

Vultures released in Konwarpor

The Sivasagar forest department has released five Himalayan griffons back into their habitats nearly a month after these were found in a comatose state.Aided by the Environmental organisation IFAW-WTI the forest department officials released the griffons in Konwarpur area in the outskirt of town on Thursday evening.“We found in a comatose state last month to be taken to IFAW-WTI-run Centre for Wildlife Rehabilitation and Conservation (CWRC). They are now quite well. We released them on Thursday with the help of the forest officials,” CWRC officials told Assam Times on Friday.
