Contrary to what was believed, Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s much-touted Dhaka visit fetched hardly any good news for Anup Chetia’s family members.
The extradition of the ULFA leader failed to figure in the crucial rendezvous between Modi and his Bangladesh counterpart Sheikh Hasina.
“New Delhi has completed all formalities required to extradite the ULFA’s founder general secretary. But Dhaka was seen reluctant to figure the issue in the meetings,” said a senior official of the minister of external affairs.
Notably, minister for external affairs Sushma Swaraj last week said that Chetia’s deportation would figure in the bilateral talks between Modi and Hasina in Dhaka.
Significantly, it was believed that Dhaka was reluctant to hand Chetia over to New Delhi which would have helped Assam boost ULFA-government peace process.
