Chaos in GU campus; final decision on VC resignation on May 14

Gauhati University Vice Chancellor Dr Amarjyoti Chaudhury’s resignation citing government indifference to the lack of fund to run the varsity has sent shockwaves across the state but the final decision is expected on May 14 as the chancellor and Assam Governor is set to return to Guwahati.

On the other hand, caught in a vicious situation following the Vice Chancellor’s resignation, the Gauhati University students are in a confused a lot and have urged Dr Amarjyoti Chaudhury to withdraw the resignation in view of the upcoming examinations.

Speaking to Assam Times, the University students said they will request the Vice Chancellor to give a second thought for the betterment of the students community and for the university. The Asom jatiyatabadi Yuva Chatra Parishad is also equally shocked at the sudden resignation of Dr Amarjyoti Chaudhury as VC of the University.

Notably, Dr Amarjyoti Chaudhury, who dreamt of a world class Gauhati University after he took over as the vice chancellor of the premier seat of learning resigned on Saturday. Days after he was appointed as the vice chancellor, he drafted a vision document to uplift the varsity. But a visibly upset Dr Cahudhury resigned on September 27, 2007 alleging the Assam Government was not helping him.

Following a widespread protest, the government promised Rs 25 crores latest by December 31, 2007. He withdraw it. But on Saturday, Dr Chaudhury has sent his resignation to the chancellor He said the university has been urging the Government to release 10% UGC arrears to its teachers and employees besides increasing the grants in aid amount to the university. But the government has provided the university with Rs 26 crore against the required minimum amount of Rs 42 crore.
