Samujjal to quit AASU

All Assam Students’ Union adviser Dr Samujjal Bhattacharyya is all set to quit politics. His exit would formally take place at the AASU convention in Dudhnoi on Tuesday.

After his ceremonial exit, the AASU adviser would not join politics and would stay away from any electoral politics.

The student leader was the AASU general secretary for three terms from 1989 to 1999. Later he was elected as advisor of the state’s powerful organization for two tenures.

The Centre has yet to confirm the miscreants behind the bloodbath in Balajan where 14 people were killed and 20 others sustained injury in firing and bombing at an open market in Kokrajhar last week. In a statement on Monday, Union home minister Rajnath Singh revealed that investigations were going on to trace down the identity of the perpetrators. Parliament on Monday condoled the death of 14 people in the recent Kokrajhar carnage as it resumed the session on Monday morning. Speaker Sumitra Mahajan read out the statement and called it an act of cowardice. MPs also stood in silence for a while as a mark of respect for the departed.

The Assam government is contemplating to hand over the rhino poaching cases to NIA for investigation. Replying to a question raised by Pabindra Kumar Deka on the floor of the House on Monday, forest minister Pramila Rani Brahma said that steps are on to hand over the cases to NIA for a thorough enquiry.
