Samujjal to quit AASU

All Assam Students’ Union adviser Dr Samujjal Bhattacharyya is all set to quit politics. His exit would formally take place at the AASU convention in Dudhnoi on Tuesday.

After his ceremonial exit, the AASU adviser would not join politics and would stay away from any electoral politics.

The student leader was the AASU general secretary for three terms from 1989 to 1999. Later he was elected as advisor of the state’s powerful organization for two tenures.

All eyes fixed on Sharmila

Only a few hours is left for Irom Sharmila to break her 16 year long fast demanding immediate repeal of AFSPA. All eyes are fixed on Tuesday morning when the record holder fasting protestor would end her fast at the local court premises in Imphal. Slain militant still unidentified!

Balajan perpetrators yet to be identified

The Centre has yet to confirm the miscreants behind the bloodbath in Balajan where 14 people were killed and 20 others sustained injury in firing and bombing at an open market in Kokrajhar last week. In a statement on Monday, Union home minister Rajnath Singh revealed that investigations were going on to trace down the identity of the perpetrators. Singh said,” the identity of the extremist organisation is yet to be known." According to him, security forces recovered an AK-47 rifle, two magazines and other some explosives from the spot. Parliament condoles Kokrajhar carnage

Parliament on Monday condoled the death of 14 people in the recent Kokrajhar carnage as it resumed the session on Monday morning. Speaker Sumitra Mahajan read out the statement and called it an act of cowardice. MPs also stood in silence for a while as a mark of respect for the departed.

Gaurav, Ripun slam Govt failure

Congress MPs from Assam thrashed the BJP-led governments both in Delhi and Dispur alleging the failure to deal with the law and order situation a couple of days after the carnage in Kokrajhar where 15 people died in militant firing and bombing. Koliabor MP Gaurav Gogoi participated in the discussion before Union minister made a statement in the Lok Sabha. Same anger and shock also found an echo in the Rajya Sabha where Ripun Bora condemned the carnage in Kokrajhar and alleged the government failure.

NIA to probe rhino poaching

The Assam government is contemplating to hand over the rhino poaching cases to NIA for investigation. Replying to a question raised by Pabindra Kumar Deka on the floor of the House on Monday, forest minister Pramila Rani Brahma said that steps are on to hand over the cases to NIA for a thorough enquiry. Notably, nearly two dozen rhinos were killed for horns in Kaziranga leaving the BJP-led government in Dispur embarrassed.

Budget session resumes on stormy note

The carnage in Kokrajhar, flood, price rise and Hindu refugee issues left the BJP-led government embarrassed when the Assam Assembly resumed its budget session on Monday. Congress legislators along with their AUIDF counterparts demanded a statement from the Government. Later, AGP members also joined them. The Opposition tore apart the BJP-led Government alleging the failure of Sarbananda Sonowal who also holds the home portfolio, to ensure safety of the common people. Mahanta leaves BJP-led govt red faced

In a bizarre move that leaves the BJP-led government red faced on the floor on Monday, AGP thrashed the Narendra Modi Government at the Centre for the controversial move on the Hindu Bangladeshi nationals. Former Chief Minister and AGP leader PK Mahanta said that he was dead opposed to the move and that it would be an insult to the spirit of Assam Accord. The Asom Jatiyatabadi Yuva Chatra Parishad (AJYCP) has rolled out a slew of measures to help the flood-hit people by distributing some relief materials among them.
