Civic poll fever: 28 nominations

A total 28 numbers of candidates filed their nomination papers for election to seven wards of Raha town committee on Wednesday. The candidates accompanied by large number of supporters arrived at the Circle officer's office to file their nominations dancing with supporters, drummers were able to draw attention of the common men of the town.

Unlike in previous civic election poll , hectic political activity is being witnessed this time. Candidates of all major political parties like the Cong ( I ), BJP, and AGP filed their nomination papers apart from the independent candidates. BJP and Cong ( I ) candidates filed their nominations for all the 7 wards while the AGP has candidates from only 4 wards. There are no AGP candidates in fray from ward no. 2, 3 and 6.

Apart from the party candidates altogather 10 independent candidates have also filed nominations for the town committee poll from ward nos. 2, 3, 4, 5 and 6. There are no independent candidates in fray from ward nos. 1 and 7.

It may be mentioned here that the next chairman for the Raha town committee has been reserved for woman candidate.

Acting on a tip off , Raha police on Tuesday arrested one person for trying to extort Rs 8 lakh from one Kanak Nath of Sariohtoli village under Raha revenue circle. According to police, the arrested Pranjal Deka had nexus with Tiwa insurgency group Tiwa Liberation Army ( TLA ) and came to Raha on an extortion drive at the instance of their leader Bidyut Amseng.
Former  Congress  minister and MLA of  Batadrava constituency  Goutam Bora’s  Inova vehicle ( AS01 AK-1597 ) met with an accident on Sunday  noon at Dighaliati area at Raha. A 29-year-old married woman was murdered at her residence at Uttar Petboha village under Raha P.S on Thursday night. Sharp weapon injury marks were found on the neck, breast, and stomach  of the victim,Paree Saikia. When the neighbours reached the spot, the victim was lying on the bed and she had deep slits on her throat. During the investigation by police, it was discovered that nothing was looted from the house, which led them to suspect a personal dispute as the reason. Tapan Das , Headmaster , Nelipar Primary School and a former leader of Raha unit of All Assam Students’ Union (AASU)  who actively participated in Assam agitation passed away at his house at Chaparmukh following prolonged illness on Tuesday. He was 54. A popular personality of the area, he was loved and respected by all sections of people for his amiable disposition. He leaves behind his wife, a son and a daughter. The body of a man was found on a train that arrived at Chaparmukh junction from Tinisukia on Sunday, police said. The body, found under mysterious condition, was identified as Kiranjyoti Hazarika of Philobari, Tinisukia district. According to Chaparmukh railway police, the deceased was on his way to Guwahati from Tinisulia by the Brahmaputra mail. The cause of the death is yet not confirmed.
