Normalcy in Kokrajhar, Sonitpur

Normalcy is back to Kokrajhar, Sonitpur, Chirang and Udalguri district a week after the Adivasi carnage and incidents of retaliatory attacks. Official sources told Assam Times that refugees in large number in the trouble torn districts start leaving for their homes.

As on Wednesday, the number of refugees have decreased to 2.7 lakhs. Altogether 2,70,370 persons have yet to leave 91 relief camps in Kokrajhar, Sonitpur, Chirang and Udalguri districts. More refugees are expected to leave the camps on Thursday.

At present, over 2.22 lakh people are staying at 91 relief camps in Kokrajhar. It is followed by Chirang, where nearly 34,000 people are staying in 25 camps.

The authorities are running 10 relief camps in Sonitpur and nearly 10,000 people are staying at this moment in these places. Udalguri is having nine camps housing around 4,000 inmates.

Altogether 81 people, including 26 women and 18 infants, were killed since December 23 evening in serial attacks by NDFB(S) terrorists, retaliatory violence and police firing across the four districts.

Curfew has been lifted completely in Sonitpur, while night curfew is still going on at some places of others districts as precautionary measure.

The Centre has raised the margin money for khadi and village industries from Rs 66 cr to Rs 100 cr for the next financial year 2013-2014.This was confirmed by none other than Union Minister of State for MSME (Independent) KH Muniyappa in Guwahati.  He said that the decision was taken at a meeting with Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi and senior officials . Renowned vaishnavite veteran Sonaram Chutia passed away after a brief ailment on Wednesday. Chutia died at the Jorhat Medical College Hospital at 9.15 in the evening. Karimganj police on Wednesday confirmed the arrest of a youth for torturing a five-year-old girl. The five-year-old girl, who went missing on January 28 evening, was found lying in a paddy field with severe injuries near her house at Pinnagar village on January 29. Her father alleged that she was raped by the youth, who was arrested by the police on the basis of the allegation.
