The Assam government starts distributing the Anundoram Barooah Award to the first and high second division holder HSLC examinees from Tuesday. Chief minister Tarun Gogoi gave away the award to the recipients at a function in Khanapara in the morning.
In his address, Gogoi advised the students to take a vital lead to dress the society afresh with innovative mind and idea which, he hoped, would pay dividend in near future.
Education minister Pradyut Bordoloi, parliamentary secretary for education Rekibudin Ahmed were prominent among those who attended the function.
Comprising a certificate and a laptop, the award would be given away to altogether 40,800 first and high second division holder HSLC examinees in 2014 across the state.
The Aam Admi Party (AAP) will field Manoram Gogoi from Jorhat constituency in the upcoming Lok Sabha polls.The outgoing journalist with a satellite television channel has formally joined the party on Wednesday where he disclosed his decision to contest from Jorhat.Gogoi would face BK Handique from Congress and Pradeep Hazarika from AGP in the polls.

AGP and BJP are not happy with the poll schedule announced for Assam by the Election Commission on Wednesday.Both the parties would request the country’s poll panel to reconsider the schedule.AGP and BJP leaders said that Ashokastomi falls on April 7 when the polling will take place in Jorhat, Dibrugah, Kaliabor, Nagaon, Tezpur and Lakhimpur.Similarly, on April 12 polling will take place in Diphu, Karimganj, Silchar two days before the Rongali Bihu.The Opposition parties have alleged that the country’s poll panel could not assess the scenario in the absence of proper interpretation of the state Government.
Several KMSS activists sustained injury in Golaghat when police sprang upon to them for blocking roads demanding immediate release of Akhil Gogoi.The incident took place at Alichiga when police tried to disperse the KMSS activists who blocked a vital road.Police even resorted to blank firing when a section of the allegedly protestors turned violent and damaged a number of vehicles on the road.

The state is all set to go to the Lok Sabha polls in three phases.This was disclosed at a press conference by Chief Election Commissioner VS Sampath on Wednesday.He said that the first phase will take place in Tezpur, Dibrugarh, Nagaon, Kaliabor, Jorhat and Lakhimpur.The second phase of polling slated for April 12 comprises Karimganj, Silchar and Diphu. The third and final phase of polling will take place on April 24 in Guwahati, Kokrajhar, Barpeta and Dhubri.The counting would take place on May 16.

Police are all set to produce Akhil Gogoi before court on Wednesday four days after he was arrested in connection with the recent self immolation of a KMSS activist.According to sources, police will seek extension of Gogoi’s remand for two or three more days.Gogoi along with five others would be produce before the court in the afternoon.
