A US team is on a visit to Assam to find out the mortal remains of their four soldiers who died in air crash during the World War II. Led by David Gooch, the team under the banner of Joint Prisoners of War/Missing in Action Accounting Command is visiting Sivasagar district.
The focus of attention is a tiny village in Charaideo where the US team along with the officials of archeological survey of India is searching the remains of the US soldiers. The team starts search operation from Wednesday till November 5. The mortal remains, if found, would be handed over to the family members.
The crash took place on June 26 in 1944 when the US war plane crashed with eleven soldiers in Kothiakhunda village. Bodies of seven soldiers were recovered. Four others were left out because of an unavoidable circumstances.

The US Government is currently working with Rimo Expeditions to recover the mortal remains of four crewmen still missing from the crash of the US Army Air Force B-29 bomber "Eileen", which crashed in Assam's Sivasagar district on 26 June 1944. The missing airmen are 2nd Lt. Walter B. Miklosh of Illinois, Flight Officer Chester L. Rinke of Michigan, S/Sgt. Donal C. Aiken of Washington state, and T/Sgt. John M. Larkins of Tennessee (sources: C. M. Quinn, The Aluminum Trail (1989), National World War II Memorial). We pray that their remains will be recovered and returned to their families. Army has been deployed and indefinite curfew clamped on Saturday in the silk town Sualkuchi in Kamrup (Rural) district following protests against use of artificial silk during which 10 persons were injured in police firing.The district administration called in the army after imposing the prohibitory orders under section 144 Cr P C from 2 pm to contain a second day of protests by weavers who called a 12-hour bandh.Personnel of the Army's Punjab Regiment were patrolling the town along with police and paramilitary forces.

The killing of Gangaram Kaul seems to have drawn protest across the state. Workers in Guwahati staged protest demanding justice to the victim’s family. The protesters call it a political murder and demanded steps to nab the culprit involved in it. People of all walks of life joined the celebration by smearing each other in colour with great pomp and splendor. They gathered in large numbers to celebrate the festival of colours forgetting all religious biases. In Guwahati, it’s very enjoyable as rain dance pulled huge revelers even amid scarcity of waters. Locals in Barpeta area preferred the use of organic colours and urged people to not waste water on the day. Dances processions were taken out on the roads by the locals to celebrate the festival. Men and women dressed up in costumes and walked in a sea of colour in accompaniment of the drumbeats as the procession slowly made its way through the city.

Dispur is waiting for Anup Cheita’s extradition to boost the peace process with ULFA.In his response to a question on ULFA-government process, minister Rockybul Hussian on behalf of the home department informed the House on Monday that process was on to bring the jailed ULFA general secretary back from Bangladesh. He said that altogether 12 insurgent outfits operating in Assam have agreed to strike peace deal with the government.
The rhino census is set to end on Monday. The two-day exercise is being conducted in all the five ranges of the park — Kohora, Bagori, Burapahar, Agoratoli and Biswanathghat. More than 250 personnel from the state forest department, NGOs and media groups have been engaged in the operation.The headcount of rhinos in Kaziranga is a regular practice and is conducted to implement a fruitful conservation method. For the census operation, the park has been divided into two parts and 81 blocks. The remaining part on the northern bank of the Difolu, including the chapori areas of the Brahmaputra, is being covered on Monday.
Despite round-of-the-clock vigil, rhino poaching refuses to die down in Kaziranga. Poachers in the famed national park killed one more rhino on Saturday and the hornless body was rescued in the wee hours at Burapahar range of the world heritage site.The incodent took place hardly 24 hours after the hornless carcass of a rhino was found in the national park.
