US team digging history in Sivasagar

A US team is on a visit to Assam to find out the mortal remains of their four soldiers who died in air crash during the World War II. Led by David Gooch, the team under the banner of Joint Prisoners of War/Missing in Action Accounting Command is visiting Sivasagar district.

The focus of attention is a tiny village in Charaideo where the US team along with the officials of archeological survey of India is searching the remains of the US soldiers. The team starts search operation from Wednesday till November 5. The mortal remains, if found, would be handed over to the family members.

The crash took place on June 26 in 1944 when the US war plane crashed with eleven soldiers in Kothiakhunda village. Bodies of seven soldiers were recovered. Four others were left out because of an unavoidable circumstances.

The US Government is currently working with Rimo Expeditions to recover the mortal remains of four crewmen still missing from the crash of the US Army Air Force B-29 bomber "Eileen", which crashed in Assam's Sivasagar district on 26 June 1944. The missing airmen are 2nd Lt. Walter B. Miklosh of Illinois, Flight Officer Chester L. Rinke of Michigan, S/Sgt. Donal C. Aiken of Washington state, and T/Sgt. John M. Larkins of Tennessee (sources: C. M. Quinn, The Aluminum Trail (1989), National World War II Memorial). We pray that their remains will be recovered and returned to their families. Utter disappointment seems to have gripped the Assam Congress legislators after the AICC has recommended Sanjoy Singh’s name for the Rajya Sabha membership from the state.Nobody has disclosed their disappointment in public. But sources told Assam Times that the APCC in rank and file are dead opposed to the move to elect a candidate from UP who was closed to Rajiv Gandhi.On the other hand, the party has yet to disclose the name of the third choice candidate for the Rajya Sabha polls slated for February 7. According to sources, either Bhubneswar Kalita or Kirip Chaliha is set to be fielded for the seat.
A major tragedy has been averted in Udalguri when security forces defused a powerful IED on Monday.Planted under a bridge in Bhergaon, the bomb was spotted by the local residents reported it to the police before being defused.

The entire Guwahati city plunges into a dearth of potable water from Monday morning. The situation is expected to improve only after the next 72 hours.Public health engineering workers are on strike from 5 in the morning alleging the failure of the government to redress their grievances.The workers on strike have not allowed the hired men to run the water pumps at the Pandu Ghat. They raised their 14 point demands last week threatening strike from Monday. But of no avail forcing them to resort to strike for the next 72 hours.
Assam Congress legislators will meet on Monday to chalk out a slew of strategies to put up an outstanding performance in the upcoming Lok Sabha polls.The brain storming meet is scheduled to take place at 11 in the morning at the legislators’ conference in the Assembly House premises.    Grievances of a section of legislators are likely to figure in the meeting to be presided over by chief minister Tarun Gogoi. Gogoi is likely to apprise his fellow legislators of the outcome of the meeting with party vice president Rahul Gandhi.The meeting is further expected to discuss the upcoming Rajya Sabha polls along with the assembly session being convened from February 10 to 15.
APCC poll panel will meet on Monday to prepare panels of candidates for each of the Lok Sabha constituencies.Internal observers are expected to submit their findings on Monday on the winnable candidates after touring the  constituencies.The poll panel is scheduled to meet at 3 in the afternoon at the Hotel Greenwood in Khanapara.The panels would be sent to the AICC poll committee in New Delhi for screening.   
Rajya Sabha MP from BPF Biswajeet Daimary is all set to file his nomination on Monday seeking reelection to the Upper House with the help of Congress.Daimary is scheduled to file his nomination on Monday before the returning officer in Dispur.BPF sources told Assam Times that Daimay would be the second choice candidate in the Rajya Sabha polls slated for February 7.His term will expire on April 13 along with Bhubneswar Kalita from Congress and Birendra Prasad Baishya from AGP.
The Opposition is likely to give the Congress an easy walk over in the Rajya Sabha polls for three seats.The opposition comprising manly BJP, AGP and AIUDF have not been able to project a consensus candidate for the polls slated for February 7.BJP has already given walk over citing lack of strength. AGP and AIUDF are in talks. But there is hardly any outcome. As a result, AGP will lose its lone seat in the upper House.

Assam Congress president Bhubneswar Kalita is likely to seek re-election to the Rajya Sabha.According to top sources, Kalita, whose term will expire on April 13 is all set to file his nomination before the returning officers in Dispur on Monday two days after he got green signal from the party high command.He is expected to be the party’s first choice candidate for the polls slated for February 7.In yet another significant development, the party is believed to have finalised nomination of Kirip Chaliha as the third choice. A circle of legislators have been lobbying for the former Lok Sabha MP for the last couple of months.
