Young social activist and Krishak Mukti Sangram Samiti president Akhil Gogoi received the prestigious 2nd Shanmugam Manjunath Integrity Award from the Magsassay awardee Kiran Bedi at a function held on Friday at the IIT Seminar Hall, New Delhi. Giving away the award Magsassay Award winner encouraged Mr Gogoi for his relentless and untiring efforts to ensure transparency between public life and government functionings. Mr Gogoi who hails from upper Assam’s Golaghat district has been awarded for his fight against corruption.
The award is dedicated to encourages those who work to uphold the values of truth and honesty in Indian corporate, government and public life.
The award has a citation and a cash prize of Rupees One Lakh.
Manjunath Shanmugam, Alumnus of IIM Lucknow, was a Indian Oil sales officer, who unfolded adultration of fuel by a IOCL dealer in Lakhimpur Khiri area of Uttar Pradesh and later he was killed by the IOCL dealer.

Akhil Gogoi is a brave person who is fighting against the goons and corrupt politicians and officials who are looting public money. Government should provide adequate security to him.

I hope the strength in his commitment grows with the days.Yes, he has arrived. But arrival is the starting part of the story to begin.I hope this continues. He needs support. But he must never be disappointed and depressed with any hurdles that may come to him. I hope he stands by his ego and his attitude make him more stronger, more enlightented in his vision. He has a lot to do.

We need people like Akhil Gogoi to save Asom and it's rich culture. Politicians boost of various packages for millions of poors but who created these poor people in a self sufficient state like Asom. Because of very poor management, the Asom is in a very bad situation and immediate action is required to protect interest of indigenous peoples of Asom. DK Borah

Peasant protesters peacefully returning from D C office Guwahati without submitting memoranda has been a morally higher & victorious job than taking law onto one's own hand. The Congress govt perhaps wanted to enact another Beltola incident so that later on they can blame peaceful protesters of violence. My only request:- you seem to be the proverbial "last straw" , dont enter politics and ditch the indegenious people of Assam like many of todays politicians did in recent past. Assam has enough of it's share of betrayal by her son of the soil. we can ill afford more!!!

The term 'gathia' (short statured) used by BTC chief Hagrama Mahiliary for Akhil Gogoi on the July 18 Congress-BPF rally is not in good taste. KMSS secretary is fighting corruption. Had Bodofa Upen Brahma been alive, he would have been proud of Akhil Gogoi and not Hagrama Mahiliary. Akhil Gogoi's manner of protest is democratic like the one by late Upen Brahma. He is the re-incarnation of Bodofa Upen Brahma, this time for entire Assam.
Neither Hagrama nor Ranjan Daimary have folowed Bodofa's ideals. We would have loved to hear Hagrama speak when Udalguri was burning in 2008 Bodo-Bangladeshi riots. Suprisingly Hagrama was silent then.

Three peope have been injured while a powerful blast rocked a vegetable market in Nalbari. The explosion took place at 6in the evening. The injure peopes have been rushed to the hospital. They are Nalini Kalita, Rabindra Sarma and Biswajit Debnath. On the other hand, two hardcore ULFA cadres died at an encounter with army at the Dibru Saikhowa sanctuary. The encounter reportedly going on and the army jawans are cordoning off the entire area.
The Union home ministry has sent a slew of instructions for the north eastern states to deal with any situation during the Republic Day celebrations in the region. These instructions ask the state governments to take extra precautionary measures in view of Republic Day boycott call by United Liberation Front of Asom and three others. With less than 24 hours left for the Republic Day, security has been beefed up across the state to ensure peace and normalcy during the day. Besides intensifying patrolling on the streets, police and para military troops have been deployed at the vital bridges, railway stations along with oil and gas installations apprehending militant strikes. Despite drizzling in January Coldwave, around seventy five per cent voters exercised their franchise in the fourth and final phase of panchayat polling in Darrang district on Thursday. NABARD has planned to invest a total Rs 2224.63 crore for 2008-2009 in Assam. Addressing a seminar held on Thursday at the Assam Administrative Staff College, the banks’s chief general manager C K Gopalakrishna said of this amount, the potential assessed for agriculture is Rs 886.38 crore , Rs 441.05 crore for industries while Rs 897.19 crore is being kept for services. He said in view of the thrust on agriculture and food processing industries, a credit potential of Rs 35.23 crore has been estimated for the year. Noted economist Dr Jayanta Madhab inaugurated the seminar which was attended by several senior bank officials.
The Black Widow has killed one Amri Rupsi in Haflong on Thursday morning alleging him to be a police informer. According to information, the publicity secretary of the outfit Phaisang Dimasa came to Rupsi at around 7 in the morning and took him away to the street and shot dead from a close range saying him to be a police informer. Amid tight security, Assam is going to the fourth and final phase of the panchayat elections in Darrang district from in the morning on Thursday. The polling is going on at 728 voting centers in the district. As many as 4,50,000 voters are voting for 3659 candidates. The voting will end at 4.00 pm. Around 70 per cent of the voters had exercised their franchise in the first phase of the polls on December 31, while around 72 per cent cast their votes in the second phase on January 4. An estimated 74 per cent of the electorate had exercised their franchise in the third phase of polling on January 9.
Thirty-eight ULFA cadres, including a woman cadre, laid down their arms before the army in Tamulpur in Baksa district on Thursday morning. The group was by Nayan Kakoti who surrendered before the GOC 4 Corps Lt Gen B S Jamwal at 21 Mountain Brigade Headquarters of Red Horn Division.
