The Assam government blames it all on the NSCN (IM) escalating tension along the Assam-Nagaland border in Golaghat district.
Dispur has already sent its report to the Centre saying that the insurgent outfit has been fomenting trouble along the border for the last couple of years.
Additional central security forces have landed in the trouble torn areas to contain the situation. Police officials monitoring the situation told Assam Times that there is no report of any fresh incident during the last 24 hours. But the people are still fearing a backlash.
Talking to Assam Times, local resident of Chetiagaon area Rubul Saikia said that the authorities have done precious little to restore confidence among the panic stricken people. Even they have not asked the people not to leave their homes.
“Refugee camps are not the solution. Let the authorities hold public meetings, let them strengthen security measures in the area, then the situation won’t remain tense.
“We have been opposing some business by a section Naga people on the soil of Assam. But the authorities have been maintaining a studied silence. You see the results. Had we not allowed them to do business here, how could they have come here,” said Uttam Gogoi, a social worker.
Meanwhile, thousands of people from five villages have fled their homes after armed Naga miscreants raided their villages in the last 48 hours and set houses on fire.
On Tuesday, the miscreants fired at a gathering of villagers at Chetiagaon when they had gathered near the CRPF camp (stationed as neutral force) in search of two students, who were suspected to be kidnapped by NSCN (IM), on July 26.
The two kidnapped Class X students — Phingson Kujur and Ajar Gar — are still missing.
