NDFB-S militant held in Chirang Security forces on Wednesday apprehended a former BSF jawan who later joined NDFB(S) militant during a combing operation of police and CRPF at Panbari Bazar in Chirang district .

Identified as Ranjan Gayari, he was captured as he was trying to hurl a grenade at police. //

ULFA slams Govt for award to Sharmila

The United Liberation Front of Asom has strongly criticized Sankadev Award for Sharmila Tagore a day after the film personality received the coveted award from president Pranab Mukherjee.In an e-mail statement, the banned insurgent outfit alleged that Tagore has hardly any contribution to Assamese language literature. According to ULFA, it has belittled the saint. ULFA further asked Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi to explain the reasons for selecting Tagore’s name and to made the names of the panel members public.  

Prez confers Assam Ratna, Sankardev award

Minor girl raped in Titabor

Utter sensation prevails in Titabor where a six-year-old girl was allegedly raped in a tea garden.  According to the FIR filed on the complaint of the girl's father, she was called out of her house in the labour lines of Rongdoi tea estate on Sunday by the accused. The victim’s father and locals have claimed that the incident took place due to the presence of illegal country liquor shops which attract miscreants to the area. 

CM holds talks on city flood

Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi on Monday ordered immediate steps to mitigate the woes of the Guwahati citizens in view of the flash floods causing major inconvenience in the city.Stung by open criticism, Gogoi held an emergent meeting with Guwahati Development Department Minister Ajanta Neog and GMDA Chairman Capt Robin Bordoloi and asked them to step in with measures to deal with artificial floods.He further suggested an expert committee to enable the Government to formulate a comprehensive policy to tackle the water woes.

Explosives seized in Basistha

Basistha police have seized explosives on Sunday hours before Pranab Mukherjee’s visit on Sunday.  These include some gelatin sticks, electric detonators seized during an intensified operation in the evening. Police arrested two youths in this connection. They were identified as Ranjit Rabha and Pratap Rajbanshi.

Rains wreak havoc in Guwahati

Maize growers woes

Maize farmers in Bongaigaon district threatened to commit suicide in protest against the spurious quality of maize seeds distributed to them by the state government.The maize plants bloomed fully in the 43,200 square feet land under plantation, there was hardly any yield in them, the farmers alleged. The poor production has pushed the 50-odd farmers to a severe financial crisis.But the farmers registered a record production last year by selling many quintals of produce in the market. The farmers threatened to end their lives without adequate compensation.
