Gogoi faces wrath; effigy burnt

JINTUL TALUKDAR, BARPETA: Minority students are angry with the chief minister Tarun Gogoi who dropped border development minister Siddique Ahmed on Tuesday.

Hundreds of the students hailing from the minority communities on Wednesday burnt the effigy of Tarun Gogoi at Kalgasia in Barpeta district for Siddique’s exclusion.

Talking to Assam, the protestors said that Gogoi has insulted the minority communities by replacing Ahmed who has been making no less contribution for the uplift of the communities.

They further threaten to launch statewide agitation against Tarun Gogoi anti-minority policies.

Flood situation remains unchanged in Barpeta district on Sunday where over 15,000 people have been reeling under the surging waters.The worst-hit district has 13,000 marooned people to be followed by Goalpara where more than 8,000 people have been remaining homeless.

More and more people start Zubeen Garg for his alleged indecency at the Pathsala bihu function on Saturday. Addressing a press conference in Bajali AJYCP leaders said that the singer's comment on the national anthem was funny and disguesting. AASU leaders also alleged that the heart throb has crossed the limits. Zubeen on Saturday said that his sonore hojuwa poja shoule be the national anthem in place of Bezbarua's o mur aaponar dex much to the disappointment of the organizers.
Disappointed over the style of performance on Saturday, the bihu organisers in Pathsala have decided not to invite Zubeen Garg in future. Addressing a pressmeet in Pathsala on Sunday, the organisers said that they are unhappy with the heart throb which does not look nice and decent. "Really his performace belittled our function. It is unfortunate and unexpected," an organizer told Assam Times.

Over 500 families have been rendered homeless in Barpeta and Sorbhog after a storm lashed out the entire area on Monday.The storm that lashed the area in the wee hours stayed for 30 minutes disrupted the surface communication uprooting trees and light posts on the roads.The ASEB, BSNL workers have been trying to restore the normalcy. There is no report of any casualty in the storm.
A pall of glooms descends in the entire Bajali area in Barpeta district when renowned physician Dr Umesh Chandra Das breathed his last on Wednesday.Various parties, organizations and individuals arrived in his residence early in the morning and paid their last homage to the lifeless Das immediately they came to know the sad news.Talking to Assam Times, a cross section of the people conveyed their deep sympathy to the bereaved family members and prayed to the God for eternal peace of the departed soul.Das, the first MBBS degree holder in the huge area passed away at his own residence at the age of 92. Born in 1923 at Jalighata, Das is survived by his three sons and four daughters.

Security forces have captured yet another Jamat-ul-Mujahideen  activist in Barpeta district hours after police recovered 10 bombs stashed by these activists in Baksa district on Sunday.Sources told Assam Times that identified as Nazmul Islam, who has been running Koraguri Ancholok Madrassa was arrested from Bhawanipur at around 5-30 in the evening by a team of special operation unit of police and National Investigation Agency.Nazmul the son of village head man Bahadur Ali is a close associate of Sahanur Ali who is an accused in the Burdwan explosion. 
Police on Sunday recovered 10 bombs in Baska district hours after Nur Jamal Hoque confessed during interrogation. Acting on the custodial revelations of the Jamat-ul-Mujahideen, security personnel launched a search operation at Panpara area near Salbari in the district and recovered the bombs..According to police, JMB had stored at least 100 IED in different lower Assam areas. The IED's were recovered from a plantation in the remote area which were stored by Nur Jamal Hoque. Police and National Investigation Agency (NIA) had jointly launched search operation in different areas to recover the other hidden IED.
