Cashew nut cartel!

After egg, betel leaf, fish and meat, now it’s the cartel of cashew nuts that makes the fruit more dearer for common people these days.

Some sensational revelations have come out during the investigation by the Assam Times.

A part of the cartel has been remaining active in Fancy Bazar area where Shanti Lal, Manoj Moore and Sunil Bothra have already stopped the rush of cashew nuts from outside. Cashew nuts procured from Mancachar are available in the Guwahati markets these days.

The trio have been running this cartel under the patronage of a powerful circle of people in Dispur which is why, these people have been maintaining a studied silence on the allegations of this dirty deal in cashew nuts.

Its strange to note. Raw cashew nut is available at Rs 65 per 2 KG while the price of a dressed cashew nut is available at Rs 480 per kg (If 2 kg raw cashew nut are required to get 1 KG of dressed cashew nut).

The raw cashew nuts procured from Garo hills are processed in Mancachar by the industries run by Dilip Bothra and Mahesh Agarwalla.

The workers are allegedly underpaid where they get Rs 50 for processing cashew nut per kilo in addition to Rs 20 for electricity charge.

With 20 percent benefit for the traders, the cashew nuts should have been available at a price not more than Rs 250.

But the cashew nut price stands at Rs 480 per KG only because of the cartel where Mancachar MLA Javed Islam mires in controversy.

According to allegation, the dissident MLA has been patronizing the entire cartel of cashew nuts with tacit support from a section of officials from the Dhubri administration.

It take about 4 kg of raw cashew to get 1 kg of the processed cashew nut which is being sold in the market. The investment in raw material is high, and also the rate of raw cashew reaches to about 80-100 kg during the off season. Hence, the prices are high.

2 more dead in Dhemaji flood

 Flash flood has claimed two more lives in Dhemaji district. Local residents of Mechaki in Jonai fished out the body of Bishnuram Barman on Monday a day after the country boat ferrying him was washed away by the strong water currents of the river Brahmaputra. Another shocking death was reported from Chitalmari in Sisiborgaon circle where the four year old boy Paban Pait slipped from his house in the morning. But the body was fished out in Mechaki in the evening. With this, the toll in this flood wave has gone up to nine. Seven people others one each in Lakhimpur, Dhubri, Nalbari, Golaghat and Barpeta and two in Morigaon districts.    

No let-up in flood woes

  There is no let-up in the flood fury that has claimed 7 lives apart from rendered over ten lakh people in fifteen districts homeless  during this week. The Brahmaputra and its tributaries are still flowing above the danger level even after the halt in the incessant rains in Arunachal Pradesh. The waterlevels in the mighty river are on the rise at Nematighat, Dhubri and Dibrugarh. Same it is in the cases of the river Jai Bharali in Sonitpur, Kopili in Kampur and Beki in Barpeta districts. Cong names bypoll candidates

Congress has announced its candidates for three assembly seats where bypolls are to be held on September 13. The AICC poll panel has announced the names of Arun Dulla Majumdar in Silchar. Rajdeep Gowala has been from Lakhipur while Basiruddin Lashkar will be the candidate from Janmunamukh assembly seat.  The process of filing nominations has already started and the last date for filing of nomination papers in August 27.  

Intensify counter insurgency operation

CM orders probe against Chirang police

Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi on Monday announced a thorough probe into the allegations of police inaction in the Priya Basumatary killing case six days back. According to allegation, while Priya was killed on August 20 afternoon, the police never went to Dwimuguri along the Indo-Bhutan border where the murder took place. Only the villagers recovered her body next day and handed it over to the police at Salbari. Gogoi said that Priya was not a police informer.

Rs 520 cr for police modernization

 The Assam government has received a huge fund of Rs 520 crore from the Centre to modernize police since 2004. The disclosure was made in the Assam Assembly on Monday by forest and environment minister Rockybul Hussain. According to Hussain, "Out of the total amount, Rs 68.99 crore have been spent on purchasing of vehicles and Rs 92.49 crore were used for arms and ammunition." Hussain said the police department currently has a total of 5,270 vehicles, of which 2,532 are two-wheelers and the rest are four-wheelers and other higher carriage capacity vehicles. Flood woes turn grave; toll 7

Flood fury worsens on Monday as more and more areas in several districts have come under the surging waters.  The Brahmaputra and its tributaries have been flowing above the danger level. Intensify rescue and relief: Gogoi

 Chief minister Tarun Gogoi has directed the revenue and disaster management department to rescue the people trapped in the current wave of flood. Gogoi has further directed the department to gear up relief and rehabilitation of the flood affected people on a war-footing. Saradha scam: CBI quizzes Manoranjana

The CBI team probing the multi crore Saradha scam is believed to have received some stunning revelations when it interrogated Manoranjana Singh on Sunday. Singh, who took Rs 25 crore from Sudipta Sen to set up the Frontier TV in Guwahati, was quizzed at CBI’s Salt Lake office in the evening. Sinh, the estranged wife of Matang Singh was interrogated in full view of Sudipta Sen who disclosed all these transaction in a purported letter to the authorities.
