Cashew nut cartel!

After egg, betel leaf, fish and meat, now it’s the cartel of cashew nuts that makes the fruit more dearer for common people these days.

Some sensational revelations have come out during the investigation by the Assam Times.

A part of the cartel has been remaining active in Fancy Bazar area where Shanti Lal, Manoj Moore and Sunil Bothra have already stopped the rush of cashew nuts from outside. Cashew nuts procured from Mancachar are available in the Guwahati markets these days.

The trio have been running this cartel under the patronage of a powerful circle of people in Dispur which is why, these people have been maintaining a studied silence on the allegations of this dirty deal in cashew nuts.

Its strange to note. Raw cashew nut is available at Rs 65 per 2 KG while the price of a dressed cashew nut is available at Rs 480 per kg (If 2 kg raw cashew nut are required to get 1 KG of dressed cashew nut).

The raw cashew nuts procured from Garo hills are processed in Mancachar by the industries run by Dilip Bothra and Mahesh Agarwalla.

The workers are allegedly underpaid where they get Rs 50 for processing cashew nut per kilo in addition to Rs 20 for electricity charge.

With 20 percent benefit for the traders, the cashew nuts should have been available at a price not more than Rs 250.

But the cashew nut price stands at Rs 480 per KG only because of the cartel where Mancachar MLA Javed Islam mires in controversy.

According to allegation, the dissident MLA has been patronizing the entire cartel of cashew nuts with tacit support from a section of officials from the Dhubri administration.

It take about 4 kg of raw cashew to get 1 kg of the processed cashew nut which is being sold in the market. The investment in raw material is high, and also the rate of raw cashew reaches to about 80-100 kg during the off season. Hence, the prices are high.

Meet to boost border bonhomie

In a bid to restore confidence among the people along the Assam-Nagaland border in Golaghat, the Assam government officials will hold a meeting between heads of all the affected villages from both sides on September 22. Former DGP hospitalized

IIT-G student commits suicide

Yet another suicide incident shocks the Guwahati IIT. A B Tech student of the institute committed suicide on Sunday. According to information, identified as Tushar Yadav, the student from Gurgon in Haryana committed suicide by jumping from the fourth floor of his hostel. The incident took place at 8 in the morning where Yadav was believed to have jumped from Kameng Hostel. He was taken to the hospital where he was declared brought dead. This was the second such incident during the last six months.

Trader killed in Dalgaon blast

A businessman was killed and another sustained injury when suspected NDFB-S militants exploded a powerful grenade in Dalgaon on Saturday night. The incident took place near the office of the Bargang Tea Estate when two motorcycle born militants lobbed the grenade at the tea garden office. Businessman Kavil Chand Jain was killed on the spot while Ramakanta Tiwari who is a staffer at the tea garden sustained serious injury. Sadananda in 5 days CBI custody

The Central Bureau of Investigation probing the Saradha scam got Sadananda Gogoi in five days custody a day after the investigation agency arrested him in connection with the multi crore scam.CBI’s special Crime branch got five days custody when the popular singer and film maker was produced before the Alipore court in the afternoon.The judge granted the remand to the investigation agency till September 17.Gogoi was arrested at the Kolkata office after five hours of interrogation for his alleged role in the link between Saradha chief Sudipto Sen and a circle of ministers, MLAs and businessmen. 

Polling ends peacefully in Lakhipur

Amid mammoth security arrangement, polling in Jamunamukh is over as soon as the clock struck at 5 in the afternoon with a huge turn out.The polling was by and large peaceful where no major incident or anomalies were reported.
