Cashew nut cartel!

After egg, betel leaf, fish and meat, now it’s the cartel of cashew nuts that makes the fruit more dearer for common people these days.

Some sensational revelations have come out during the investigation by the Assam Times.

A part of the cartel has been remaining active in Fancy Bazar area where Shanti Lal, Manoj Moore and Sunil Bothra have already stopped the rush of cashew nuts from outside. Cashew nuts procured from Mancachar are available in the Guwahati markets these days.

The trio have been running this cartel under the patronage of a powerful circle of people in Dispur which is why, these people have been maintaining a studied silence on the allegations of this dirty deal in cashew nuts.

Its strange to note. Raw cashew nut is available at Rs 65 per 2 KG while the price of a dressed cashew nut is available at Rs 480 per kg (If 2 kg raw cashew nut are required to get 1 KG of dressed cashew nut).

The raw cashew nuts procured from Garo hills are processed in Mancachar by the industries run by Dilip Bothra and Mahesh Agarwalla.

The workers are allegedly underpaid where they get Rs 50 for processing cashew nut per kilo in addition to Rs 20 for electricity charge.

With 20 percent benefit for the traders, the cashew nuts should have been available at a price not more than Rs 250.

But the cashew nut price stands at Rs 480 per KG only because of the cartel where Mancachar MLA Javed Islam mires in controversy.

According to allegation, the dissident MLA has been patronizing the entire cartel of cashew nuts with tacit support from a section of officials from the Dhubri administration.

It take about 4 kg of raw cashew to get 1 kg of the processed cashew nut which is being sold in the market. The investment in raw material is high, and also the rate of raw cashew reaches to about 80-100 kg during the off season. Hence, the prices are high.

Setback for CBI’s Saradha probe

Shankar Baruah cremated

The mortal remains of Shankar Baruah consigned to flames hours after the former DGP shot himself at his residence in Guwahati on Wednesday.His last rites were performed at the Navagraha cremation ground in the evening.Before the government officials and the Police officials paid tributes to his mortal remains at the 4th Assam Police Battalion headquarters at Kahilipara.Chief secretary Jitesh Khosla laid a wreath on behalf of chief minister Gogoi. The Assam Police also gave a gun salute to the lifeless Baruah.

Unfortunate indeed: CM

Hours after former DGP Shankar Baruah committed suicide, Chief minister Tarun Gogoi called it an unfortunate incident. A shocked Gogoi said that Barua was upright and efficient police officer who discharged his duties conscientiously and assiduously./

No respite for Sadananda Gogoi

A local court in Kolkata on Wednesday remanded Sadananda Gogoi to CBI custody till Sep 20 five days after the country’s top investigating agency arrested the popular singer in connection with the Saradha scam.CBI produced Gogoi in Alipur Court in the afternoon urging extension of the custody for three more days to which the court agreed.CBI arrested Gogoi on September 12 after several hours of questioning on the scam and his role. Then the court remanded him to their custody for five days. Gogoi was arrested Sep 12 by the Central Bureau of Investigation for alleged conspiracy and misappropriation of funds.

Anjali sent to jail

A court in Guwahati on Wednesday remanded Anjali Das Thakuria to judicial custody two days after the assistant with the regional passport office in Guwahati was arrested by CBI on bribery charge. The court sent her to jail when CBI produced her following the end of 24 hour custody. The personal assistant of the regional passport office was held inside her office for accepting Rs 2000 bribe for clearing a pending file.

7 injured in magic-ambulance collision

DIBYAJYOTI BORTHAKUR, RAHA: At least ten people sustained injury when a vehicle carrying them collided its head on an ambulance in Raha on Wednesday. The incident took place at Raha Chariali on the National Highway No 37 in the afternoon when a Tata Magic vehicle was on the way to Chapormukh from Nagaon while the ambulance was bound for Nagaon from Guwahati. Local residents and police rescued the passengers from the mangled vehicle. All the injured are undergoing treatment at the Nagaon Civil Hospital. It took place three days after a popular guitarist died at a tragic road mishap at a stone’s throw distance from the spot.

Shankar Barua commits suicide

Former director general of police Shankar Baruah committed suicide on Wednesday. Baruah came home and within half an hour he went to the terrace and shot himself with his pistol revolver. Then he was immediately rushed to a nearby hospital at around 12 noon. But only to be declared brought dead there.He was admitted to Down Town hospital last week after he complained of heart problems and was released from there on Wednesday morning. His body has been sent for postmorten.The incident took place after his name hit media headlines in the Saradha scam where he was alleged to have received protection money from the chit fund.CBI had conducted raids on his house on August 27 in connection with...

Power decentralization in police

Finally, the Assam government has started decentralizing the police force. The Superintendents are free to transfer inspectors or lower-ranked officials without any permission from the DGP.According to official sources, Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi on Tuesday has given final seal of approval. Now the SPs are competent to transfer police officials in the rank of Inspector and below within their district limits.Earlier, the DGP's prior approval was required before transfer of such officials. The DGP's approval has to be obtained in case any such officers having not completed two years in their place of posting. 

CBI to produce Anjali before court

A local court in Guwahati remanded Anjali Das Thakuria to CBI custody for 24 hours on Tuesday a day after the country's premier investigation agency arrested assistant with the regional passport office on bribery charges.  Before that, the CBI produced her before the magistrate who denied her bail and remanded her to CBI custody till Wednesday. She would be produced before the court again on Wednesday before sending her to jail.CBI sleuths arrested the personal assistant of the regional passport officer from her chamber on Monday when she accepted Rs 2000 from an applicant.
