Cashew nut cartel!

After egg, betel leaf, fish and meat, now it’s the cartel of cashew nuts that makes the fruit more dearer for common people these days.

Some sensational revelations have come out during the investigation by the Assam Times.

A part of the cartel has been remaining active in Fancy Bazar area where Shanti Lal, Manoj Moore and Sunil Bothra have already stopped the rush of cashew nuts from outside. Cashew nuts procured from Mancachar are available in the Guwahati markets these days.

The trio have been running this cartel under the patronage of a powerful circle of people in Dispur which is why, these people have been maintaining a studied silence on the allegations of this dirty deal in cashew nuts.

Its strange to note. Raw cashew nut is available at Rs 65 per 2 KG while the price of a dressed cashew nut is available at Rs 480 per kg (If 2 kg raw cashew nut are required to get 1 KG of dressed cashew nut).

The raw cashew nuts procured from Garo hills are processed in Mancachar by the industries run by Dilip Bothra and Mahesh Agarwalla.

The workers are allegedly underpaid where they get Rs 50 for processing cashew nut per kilo in addition to Rs 20 for electricity charge.

With 20 percent benefit for the traders, the cashew nuts should have been available at a price not more than Rs 250.

But the cashew nut price stands at Rs 480 per KG only because of the cartel where Mancachar MLA Javed Islam mires in controversy.

According to allegation, the dissident MLA has been patronizing the entire cartel of cashew nuts with tacit support from a section of officials from the Dhubri administration.

It take about 4 kg of raw cashew to get 1 kg of the processed cashew nut which is being sold in the market. The investment in raw material is high, and also the rate of raw cashew reaches to about 80-100 kg during the off season. Hence, the prices are high.

Bengal blast: Barpeta youths in police remand

A local court West Bengal has remanded six youths to 14 days police custody a day after they were arrested from Barpeta in connection with the Burdwan explosion. They have been nabbed on the basis of the confessional statements of Amina Bibi and Rajira Bibi whom the West Bengal Police arrested after the explosion where two terrorists were killed and one was injured at a house in Khagragarh area of Burdwan on October 2. Apart from it, Assam police have been probing possible links of the six youths with the Bangladesh-based Islamic terror network Jamat-ul-Mujahideen. The investigation is on to get some vital clues regarding the presence of Islamic terror network in the state.

Police officer commits suicide

Sensation prevails in Tezpur after a police officer allegedly committed suicide on Friday. The incident was believed to have taken place in the wee hours where senior police officer Naren Talukdar shot himself dead at his room. He shot himself to death within own service pistol and is body was found inside his room at the police station complex in the morning. Post mortem report is expected to come out on Friday evening. Investigation is on to ascertain the reason for the policeman taking the extreme step.

Girl raped, killed in Nagaon

In yet another case of gruesome crime against women that hangs the state’s head in shame, a teenaged girl was raped than kled n Nagaon district on Wednesday.The shocking incident took place at Kawaimari village under Rupahihat police station at night where a girl was kidnapped to be raped by the miscreants. Then she was killed. Police and local residents found the body at a jute field in the village on Thursday. Investigation is in progress. Police officials probng the case are tightlipped on the development. They are waiting for the post mortem report.

Probe into police excess allegation

Two probes will ascertain the truth behind the allegations of police excess on the flood-hit people in Goalpara district on Wednesday.Sources told Assam Times that the government has ordered two separate probes into the distribution of poor quality relief materials and alleged police atrocities on flood-hit people in the flood-hit district.A magistrate will probe the allegations of distribution of sub standard materials among the marooned people. Munda visits Bolbola

Parliamentary Secretary for Home Etowa Munda said the two probes would ascertain the real incident where several people have been injured in Bolbola on Wednesday. Munda , who visited the area and interacted with the flood-hit people on Thursday tried to quell the situation saying that the guilty would not be spared. On the other hand, Goalpara SP Nitul Gogoi, said that police resorted to lathi charge after the protesters refused to end the blockade despite repeated appeal. HC directive to Centre

In yet another landmark order, the Gauhati High Court has asked the Centre to clear Rs 10 lakh to Silipi Acharjee whose husband died in army excess.The court directive came out after Silpi moved high court with the sensational allegation that her husband was killed by the army in their custody.She further alleged that Biswajeet was tortured in army custody after sustaining external and internal injuries. After his release, though he was admitted to Lumding Railway Hospital, he eventually died on June 2, 2004.The court further asked Delhi and Dsipur to initiate an enquiry to ascertain the army official involved in the case. Biswajit Achajree died on June 2 in 2004 at the Lumding Railway...

Ultra injured in Sonitpur encounter

A dreaded NDFB(s) militant sustained serious injury at an encounter with security forces in Sonitpur district on Wednesday hours after two groups of militants were caught in a crossfire in Udalguri district.The encounter took place at Laigangpara in Batachipur area along the Assam-Arunachal Pradesh border in the wee hours  where the dreaded militant Sujalang Basumatary was injured. Gogoi undergoes medical tests

Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi has undergone medical tests at the Gauhati Medical College Hospital on Wednesday. The tests include echocardiography and chest X-ray.Cardiologist Dr Anjan Bhattacharjee later told reporters that an echocardiography was planned for sometime which was done. According to him, the chief minister’s heart was working very well.
