Two persons were killed and ten others sustain injury in police firing at Panabari under Bijni police station in Chirang district just after declaration of election result for Kokrajhar Lok Sabha today.

 

Sources said, security forces shot at a youth this morning, who he received bullet injury at Panabari area,local publics after that gheraoed the Panbari police outpost .Later, police fired to the public to disperse the publics where two youths killed and ten persons received bullet injury.

NDFB (S) Area Commander nabbed at Dudhnoi

Based on tip-off, Indian Army apprehended the area commander of the 14th battalion of the banned outfit NDFB (S) at Balasara village under Dudhnoi police station in Goalpara district last night. The area commander has been identified as Pradip Brahma of Kokrajhar district and later he was handed over to Dudhnoi police. The militant was hiding in the area with his girl friend for the last one week in Balasara village before he was nabbed, police said. 12 live ammunitions of M16 rifle, wireless set and detonator wires were recovered from the militant.

North East gets an IIM

The Union Human Resource Development Minister Mr. Arjun Singh laid the foundation stone for the seventh Indian Institute of Management (IIM) in Shillong today. The institute named after the late Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi, will be the first IIM in the north-eastern region. It will start functioning from next academic year from a temporary campus in Shillong city with 60 students for Post Graduate diploma in Business Management in the first year. Subsequently, it will be expanded to 120 seats in the third year and 180 in the sixth year. It will also provide specialized courses to meet the specific need of the region. Speaking at the foundation stone laying ceremony, Mr. Arjan Singh that north-east is on the march and the institute will help people achieving a bright future.

Meghalaya Chief Minister Dr. D.D.Lapang said that Centre’s thrust on development in north-east and its ‘Look East policy’ has created lot of avenues for private sector. He hoped that the new IIM will be required to fulfill the much - needed management skills for the region.

GNLA rebel held near Guwahati

Security forces claimed to have captured a dreaded GNLA rebel along the Assam-Meghalaya border on Thursday.

Identified as Ramu Ch Marak, the most wanted Garo militant was held during a joint operation by army and police at Shantipur near Boko in Kamrup district in the morning.

Police further recovered a 9mm pistol along with a magazine, three rounds ammunition, one radio set, demand pads, AJRF stamps of the outfit group from his possession.

According to Assam Times Crime Investigative Bureau, the GNLA militant is believed to have revealed his involvement in extortion, kidnapping, supplying weapons and other acts of terrorism along the Assam-Meghalaya border.
