PM coming to cast vote

Dispur turns into a security fortress a day before the third and final phase of Lok Sabha polls. Dispur Govt HS School seems to have drawn maximum concentration of the security forces.

Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh is all set to visit the school to exercise his franchise on Thursday. Dr Singh, who is on his last visit to the state as a prime minister, is scheduled to arrive in Guwahati Airport at 12 noon by a special plane.

Then Dr Singh, who represents Assam in the Rajya Sabha, will straightly leave for Dispur by a helicopter where he would cast his vote at the Dispur Govt HS School at around 12-30.

During his brief visit to the capital city, Dr Singh will meet chief minister Tarun Gogoi and state Congress president Bhubneswar Kalita.

A team of special protection group has already arrived in the school premises to ensure safety and security of the prime minister whom Assam adopted in 1991.

Cost of PM and his family visit for casting vote in Assam msut be recover from his personal account as voter has to trevel to electoral booth at own cost/vehical as per the People Representation Act, there is no provisin of TA/DA/others allowances to voter for casting their votes

Cyclone alert across Assam

Its high alert across the state as cyclone Mahasen is likely to hit the north-eastern states during the next 12 hours. Areas near the Brahmaputra are on high alert and have been closed for the next 2 days and fishermen have been restricted in these areas. Control rooms have been set up in several district headquarters to help the victims if required. The storm surfaced over the Andaman and Nicobar islands on May 10 and was moving in north-west direction but on May 14.

HSLC/ AHM results on Friday

Decks are clear for Board of Secondary Education, Assam to announce the results of the High School Leaving Certificate and the Assam High Madrassa Examinations on Friday.The results will be available to the respective schools around 12 noon. The centres would be able to collect the results from Inspectors of Schools. Results are being dispatched in sealed covers to all the district headquarters. The centre in-charge will collect their respective results in the morning on Friday at 12 o’clock they will open the sealed envelopes. Female Maoist cadre held in Guwahati

Maoist activists are spreading in the nook and corner of Guwahati. Jalukbari police on Thursday claimed to have intercepted a lady Maoist cadre in the city in the wee hours. Identified as Kabita Rabha, the women cadre was arrested from Udalbakra area in the city. A CD along with some incriminating document were seized from her possession.

IED found after PM’s visit

PM seeks re election to RS

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on Wednesday filed his nomination for a fifth consecutive term in the Rajya Sabha from Assam even as he draws media ire for refusing to speak to the waiting reporters in Dispur. Later he came forwards and talked to the reporters for a minute only thanking the people for continuously electing him to the Rajya Sabha for all these years. Prez stresses moral challenges

President Pranab Mukherjee exhorted varsities to meet the requirements of moral challenges faced by society amid rising crimes against women.In his speech at the Convocation ceremony of Assam University in Silchar, Mukherjee expressed serious concerns over the inadequacies in the education sector.According to the President,“it underscores the need for society to introspect and find ways to arrest the moral decline."He said,” "if our country has to continue on its path of higher growth, then the relentless pursuit of higher educational standards is an indispensable requirement for its achievement."

ULFA slams Govt for award to Sharmila

The United Liberation Front of Asom has strongly criticized Sankadev Award for Sharmila Tagore a day after the film personality received the coveted award from president Pranab Mukherjee.In an e-mail statement, the banned insurgent outfit alleged that Tagore has hardly any contribution to Assamese language literature. According to ULFA, it has belittled the saint. ULFA further asked Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi to explain the reasons for selecting Tagore’s name and to made the names of the panel members public.
