PM coming to cast vote

Dispur turns into a security fortress a day before the third and final phase of Lok Sabha polls. Dispur Govt HS School seems to have drawn maximum concentration of the security forces.

Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh is all set to visit the school to exercise his franchise on Thursday. Dr Singh, who is on his last visit to the state as a prime minister, is scheduled to arrive in Guwahati Airport at 12 noon by a special plane.

Then Dr Singh, who represents Assam in the Rajya Sabha, will straightly leave for Dispur by a helicopter where he would cast his vote at the Dispur Govt HS School at around 12-30.

During his brief visit to the capital city, Dr Singh will meet chief minister Tarun Gogoi and state Congress president Bhubneswar Kalita.

A team of special protection group has already arrived in the school premises to ensure safety and security of the prime minister whom Assam adopted in 1991.

Cost of PM and his family visit for casting vote in Assam msut be recover from his personal account as voter has to trevel to electoral booth at own cost/vehical as per the People Representation Act, there is no provisin of TA/DA/others allowances to voter for casting their votes

3 NDFB militants nabbed

Bagsa police have arrested three hardcore NDFB militants on Friday.The militants were captured from Salbari area when they were on the way to extort money from a businessman.Four militants reached a construction to extort money from the contractor. In the absence of the contractor, they asked his assistants to pay money and left the spot. Later, the local residents overpowered them and after being assaulted the trio were handed over to police.

ULFA militant killed in Goalpara

Acting on a tip off, Guwahati police launched an operation before the encounter took place in the morning.

NHPC GM still missing

NHPC general manager Anil Kumar Agarwal has been remaining incommunicado even 48 hours after he was kidnapped by NDFB(S) militants even as police arrested three persons in this connection.Police arrested Kumar Tamang, the driver of the vehicle ferrying the NHPC top official along with Puto Mooshahary, the owner of the SIM card used by the abductors and Nijon Daimary who owned the bike used by the kidnappers.NDFB(S) militants were believed to have kidnapped Agarwal from Bhalukpung along the Assam Arunachal Pradesh border on Sunday.

Awareness programme on avenue for economic empowerment

An awareness programme on avenue for woman economic empowerment held at Tangla on September 21. The programme which was held at RC Saharia Memorial Teachers Training College hall,Tangla was organised by social worker Dr.Dipankar Saharia in association with State Institute of Rural Development (SIRD). NHPC GM kidnapped

Security forces are spreading along the Assam-Arunachal Pradesh border to rescue Anil Kumar Agarwal a day after suspected NDFB (S) militants kidnapped the general manager with National Hydroelectric Power Corporation.He was abducted at gun point from Bhalukpung in Sonitpur district on Saturday on his way to Guwahati. Agarwal was posted as general manager in the NHPC's 800 MW power project, under construction at Tawang in Arunachal Pradesh.Police called it a handiwork of the NDFB (Songbijit) faction. New dissidence politics

Dissidence within the Assam Congress legislature party takes a new turn. The dissident Congress MLAs on Friday met chief whip Nilamoni Sendeka demanding the special meeting. They want some major issues to be discussed in the meeting. Same demand seems to have surfaced in the pro Gogoi camp.

Rhino killed in Kaziranga

One more rhino was killed for its horn in Kaziranga. The incident took place in the Burahpahar range of the national Park. The male rhino was gunned down between Khorali and Borbhug forest camps on Tuesday night. Around 8 PM the forest guards heard gun shots and retaliated leading to heavy exchange of fire with the poachers for one and half hours. Launching a search operation today, the rhino carcass was recovered with its horn sawed away and empty cartridges of AK 47 and .303 rifles scattered near it. The Park and Forest Department officials suspect that poachers, helped by agents living near KNP, drive adult rhinos towards Buraphar and Bagori ranges to kill them.

Youth kills self

Yet another incident of suicide rocked Guwahati on Wednesday. It took place in Christanbasti. Identified as Jintu Phukan, the youth who worked with a shop in Fancy Bazar area hanged himself inside his rent room.

Girl commits suicide

A college girl in Ujanbazar area in Guwahati committed suicide sending shockwaves in the city. Identified as Navanita Chakarbartty, the girl who hailed from Nalbari hanged herself inside her room at a girls hostel. She had a brilliant academic career who was doing medical coaching course.
