PM coming to cast vote

Dispur turns into a security fortress a day before the third and final phase of Lok Sabha polls. Dispur Govt HS School seems to have drawn maximum concentration of the security forces.

Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh is all set to visit the school to exercise his franchise on Thursday. Dr Singh, who is on his last visit to the state as a prime minister, is scheduled to arrive in Guwahati Airport at 12 noon by a special plane.

Then Dr Singh, who represents Assam in the Rajya Sabha, will straightly leave for Dispur by a helicopter where he would cast his vote at the Dispur Govt HS School at around 12-30.

During his brief visit to the capital city, Dr Singh will meet chief minister Tarun Gogoi and state Congress president Bhubneswar Kalita.

A team of special protection group has already arrived in the school premises to ensure safety and security of the prime minister whom Assam adopted in 1991.

DoNER minister Pawan Singh seemingly is waging war against Ranne Narah after she revealed that Ghatowar paid BJP leader Sarbananda Sonowal Rs 4 crore four months back.Narah said that apart from Sonowal, Ghatowar further paid Rs 1.50 crore to BJP MLA Prasanta Phukan for helping the ruling party candidates win the Rajya Sabha polls.Ghatowar told reporters in Delhi that he would lodge a complaint before the party high command against Ranee Narah.
The BJP panel set up to probe the voting anomaly in the Rajya Sabha poll is all set to submit its report on Friday.Senior BJP leaders told Assam Times that the report would be prepared before the state party president for action against the legislator who intentionally got his vote cancelled.Led by senior leader Mison Ranjan Das, the three member panel grilled all the five legislators to fine out the truth behind the allegations. They include Parasanta Phukan, Ranjit Dutta, Jadav Deka, Manoranjan Das and Dilip Moran. 
In a major development, Congress high command is understood to have been considering the name of Jainimi Bhagawati to be fielded in the upcoming Lok Sabha polls from Tezpur seat.Senior AICC leaders told Assam Times that Bhagawati, who is at work in London, is the only choice of prime minister Dr Manmohan Singh who is well known to him.Bhagawati, a retired Indian Foreign Service officer has a strong family back ground and his father is a veteran Congress leader and freedom fighter. But final decision would be taken only after recomeendation from Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi and APCC president Bhubneswar Kalita.
Dispur police have arrested a youth in the city charging him with trying to extort money from Prafullla Kumar Mahanta.Identified as Dipak Gogoi, he was arrested acting on the FIR lodged by the former chief minister and AGP president on Thursday.According to the complaint, Mahanta received several phone calls from him demanding money to avoid shoot out. Apart from threat calls, Gogoi threw several messages from two mobile phones.        
In yet another revelations on the recent Rajyya Sabha polls, Union minister Ranee Narah accused BJP president Sarbananda Sonowal of accepting a huge amount of bribe from Congress.Narah said on Thursday in Philobari that the her probable nearest rival in the upcoming Lok Sabha polls from Lakhimpur, received Rs 4 crore from DoNER minister Pawan Singh Ghatowar giving the party a new jolt.She further said that Ghatowar also accepted Rs 1.50 crore from Ghatowar for the same purpose four months ago.An angry Ghatowar, however, denied the disclosure and threatened to take legal action against Narah.  
Security forces claimed to have killed two more NDFB-S militants at an encounter in Chirang district on Thursday.The encounter between NDFB-S and security forces took place at Phulbari along the Indo-Bhutan border where both the militants were killed on the spot.Later they were identified as Bipul Narzary and Punkha Basumatary. Police further claimed to have recovered pistol, magazine, hand grenade along with extortion notes from their possession.        
Congress and BPF legislators on Thursday evening held a meeting in Dispur to counter BJP’s poll prospect in the upcoming Lok Sabha polls.Presided over by Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi, the meeting is understood to have decided to go all out against the saffron party.Rahul Gandhi’s rally on women and youth empowerment also figured in the meeting.On the other hand, newly elected Rajya Sabha members Bhubneswar kalita, Biswajeet Daimary and Dr Sanjay Sinh have thanked the legislators for their support.

Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi has agreed to talk to the state government employees to break the deadlock over their arrear amounts.Sources told Assam Times that Gogoi has invited the Sadou Asom Karmachari Parishad for talks on February 19.With this assurance, the employees union has called off the agitation. But they made it clear that if the talks fail to end the impasse, they would have no option but to resume the strike.  The employees union has been demanding arrear for 33 months. But the chief minister initially was not interested in disbursing the arrears citing poor financial health.  
A three member BJP panel set up to probe the voting anomalies in the Rajya Sabha polls quizzed party legislator Prasanta Phukan to unearth the truth.  Led by former legislator Mison Ranjan Das, the panel quizzed the legislature party leader at the Assembly chamber for around three hours on Thursday.The panel members asked Phukan what forced him to insert the ballot paper into the box without getting it checked by the concerned agent on duty in the Rajya Sabha polls last week.The party leadership consider it a violation of party whip issued a few days before the polls.
