Goalpara geared up for polls
The Goalpara district administration has geared up for smooth conduct of the ensuing Lok Sabha poll to be held in the third phase in the state on April 24 for the two Lok Sabha segments, Dhubri and Guwahati in the district. According to reports, the concerned officials and employees have completed the preliminary preparations for the poll. The training for the polling officers and presiding officers for the polls in the district has already begun in various educational institutions. Poll awarness programs like meeting, debate and quiz competiotions among the students, rally were organised by the district election branch in different places like Dhupdhara, Dudhnoi, Agia etc of the district.
On the other hand, security has been beefed up in the district for the poll. Several battalion of paramilitary forces have been deployed in the district apart from regular patrolling by Police. Checking has been intensified by the Police to keep an eye on anti–social activities. Security forces have been keeping a sharp eye along the Assam-Meghalaya border of the district to check infiltration of militants during election time. 'All efforts have been taken to ensure peaceful and fair elections in the district' said Nitul Gogoi, SP Goalpara while talking to reporters a few days ago. Adequate security arrangement has been taken in the polling stations which have been categorised sensitive, very sensitive and critical, he added.

As many as twelve shops were gutted in a major fire that broke out at the market near NH 37 at Dudhnoi town in Goalpara District in the early hours on Friday. The fire that started accidentally in a cloth store quickly spread to ten other neighbouring shops before amassing a huge part of the market. Eight persons were killed and 40 others injured, ten of them critically, when a bus collided with a 10-wheeler truck at Rangjuli in Goalpara district on Monday. Police, Indian Army of 9th Sikhli Regiment and medical emergency personnel rushed to the spot to rescue the injured. The speeding bus, bearing no.
