Goalpara geared up for polls
The Goalpara district administration has geared up for smooth conduct of the ensuing Lok Sabha poll to be held in the third phase in the state on April 24 for the two Lok Sabha segments, Dhubri and Guwahati in the district. According to reports, the concerned officials and employees have completed the preliminary preparations for the poll. The training for the polling officers and presiding officers for the polls in the district has already begun in various educational institutions. Poll awarness programs like meeting, debate and quiz competiotions among the students, rally were organised by the district election branch in different places like Dhupdhara, Dudhnoi, Agia etc of the district.
On the other hand, security has been beefed up in the district for the poll. Several battalion of paramilitary forces have been deployed in the district apart from regular patrolling by Police. Checking has been intensified by the Police to keep an eye on anti–social activities. Security forces have been keeping a sharp eye along the Assam-Meghalaya border of the district to check infiltration of militants during election time. 'All efforts have been taken to ensure peaceful and fair elections in the district' said Nitul Gogoi, SP Goalpara while talking to reporters a few days ago. Adequate security arrangement has been taken in the polling stations which have been categorised sensitive, very sensitive and critical, he added.

Along with the rest of the state the 28th Abhiruchi Sports Day was celebrated at Dhupdhara in Goalpara district with the usual fervour on Saturday to mark the birthday of Assam’s first Arjuna Award winner Bhogeswar Barua. On the occasion a procession took out throughout Dhupdhara town by the students of Dhupdhara Girls' High School and Khairuddin Primary School. A 55 year old person was trampled to death by a wild tusker at a Village near Dudhnoi in Goalpara district in the early morning of Saturday. After damaging the house the elephant attacked Jogesh Nath when he was sleeping at his house along with other family members that night. While others managed to run away, Jogesh Nath failed to move fast and fell victim to the tusker's wrath, villagers said. In a major haul, police officials seized about 30kgs of ganja worth Rs 1.5 lakh from a passenger bus at Dudhnoi in Goalpara district on Friday evening.Four people have been arrested in the context. The heavy consignment of drugs were discovered when Dudhnoi police followed a lead by an unknown source and raided the bus AS01-AC-9722 on the National Highway. A woman was trampled to death by a wild tusker at a village near Dhupdhara in Goalpara district in the early morning of Wednesday. After damaging the house the elephant attacked Lalita Rabha (28) when she was sleeping at her house along with other family members. Thieves, who perhaps knew the movements of the members of a family residing at Charaibaha village under Boko police station in Kamrup District, succeeded in stealing cash of Rs. 1 lakh 35 thousand and gold and silver ornament on Tuesday, July 12 at around 10.30 a.m. Mauria Kachari, an employee of forest department of the village, alongwith other members of the family were away at the time, participating in a religious programme organized by themselves at a nearby Shiv Mandir.
