Cry for justice

Hundreds of students and civil society organised a procession in Kokrajhar town on Saturday demanding justice to the victim who was allegedly gang-raped and brutally murdered on the bank of Makra River under Amguri Police station in Chirang on March 29 last.

The Justice Appeal Committee for Tribal Gang Rape and Murder, Chirang has demanded fast track justice of the tribal girl and submitted a memorandum to Justice Abhay Manohar Sapre, Chief Justice of Guwahati High Court at Kokrajhar circuit house.

The committee demanded severe punishment/ capital punishment of the identified perpetrators/rapist and adequate compensation to the victims family to the tune of Rs 50 lakhs.

Submitting a memorandum the activist took out procession from the circuit House to Kokrajhar Post Office and posted around 400 post cards to the Chief Justice, Gauhati High Court seeking justice of the victim and her friend who was also assaulted.  The Justice Appeal Committee for Tribal Gang Rape and Murder, Chirang consists of the members of Bodo Sahitya Sabha, ABSU, Bodo Harimu Affat, Bodo samaj, Gaubura Association, Bodoland University Students Union, Lower Assam NGO Forum, Tribal Sangha, ABWWF, etc.

The committee condemns the gruesome incidence of gang rape in a strongest term and decry the total non action of the concerned authorities over the case and demand exemplary punishment to the rapists.The case has been registered under section 143/376/302 of IPC. However, the committee alleged that the section is not adequate as per the gravity of incidence.

The committee stated that despite demands by various communities, student bodies and organisation nothing has been initiated and the process gets delayed and issue also lie down naturally as usual. They alleged that 5 of the accused persons are yet to be arrested by police.

The committee also warned that the issue may take different course if immediate and necessary action is not initiated from the administration/judiciary.

Security forces have intensified their combing operation against militant outfits in the region.  Three link men/over ground worker of the National Democratic Front of Boroland-Songbijit faction were apprehended by security forces in a joint operation at Ripu Reserve Forest on Sunday morning in Kokrajhar district. A businessman was hospitalized after attacked with sharp weapon by miscreants at Champa bazaar area on Friday evening in Kokrajhar district. An emergency response mock drill was conducted by the Indian Oil Corporation Limited (IOCL) at Habrubari in Kokrajhar district on Friday,which was a part of offsite emergency mock on the IOCL Guwahati-Siliguri underground pipeline to test the preparedness of its emergency personnel.
