Modi rallies on March 30

Narendra Modi will visit Assam only on March 30 in in lieu of March 27----decided earlier.

During his day long visit, the BJP’s prime ministerial candidate is scheduled to hold three poll rallies—one each in Jorhat, Dibrugarh and Lakhimpur.

Modi has no schedule this time in Guwahati and Silchar a month after he held two different rallies.

People of all walks of life joined the celebration by smearing each other in colour with great pomp and splendor. They gathered in large numbers to celebrate the festival of colours forgetting all religious biases. In Guwahati, it’s very enjoyable as rain dance pulled huge revelers even amid scarcity of waters. Locals in Barpeta area preferred the use of organic colours and urged people to not waste water on the day. Dances processions were taken out on the roads by the locals to celebrate the festival. Men and women dressed up in costumes and walked in a sea of colour in accompaniment of the drumbeats as the procession slowly made its way through the city.
A 135 year old man breathed his last in Morigaon district. The end of the life of Puna Konwar came in Baribandha village on Wednesday.  Konwar, who has always been in the news for his longevity and seeing his fifth generation, died at his residence from old age related problems.

Dispur is waiting for Anup Cheita’s extradition to boost the peace process with ULFA.In his response to a question on ULFA-government process, minister Rockybul Hussian on behalf of the home department informed the House on Monday that process was on to bring the jailed ULFA general secretary back from Bangladesh. He said that altogether 12 insurgent outfits operating in Assam have agreed to strike peace deal with the government.
The rhino census is set to end on Monday. The two-day exercise is being conducted in all the five ranges of the park — Kohora, Bagori, Burapahar, Agoratoli and Biswanathghat. More than 250 personnel from the state forest department, NGOs and media groups have been engaged in the operation.The headcount of rhinos in Kaziranga is a regular practice and is conducted to implement a fruitful conservation method. For the census operation, the park has been divided into two parts and 81 blocks. Despite round-of-the-clock vigil, rhino poaching refuses to die down in Kaziranga. Poachers in the famed national park  killed one more rhino on Saturday and the hornless body was rescued in the wee hours at Burapahar range of the world heritage site.The incodent took place hardly 24 hours after the hornless carcass of a rhino was found in the national park.

The UPA government on Friday moved a bill in parliament to declare a 121-km stretch of Barak river in Assam as National Waterway. It will aim at unified development of waterways for shipping, navigation and transportation of cargo to the north-eastern region.The National Waterway (Lakhipur-Bhanga Stretch of the Barak River) Bill, 2013 was introduced by Shipping Minister G K Vasan and upon enactment would particularly benefit Assam, Nagaland, Mizoram, Manipur, Tripura and Arunachal Pradesh by facilitating cargo movement there.

Crippling dissidence in Congress finally reached party high command. Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi called on Congress president Sonia Gandhi on Thursday morning at the latter’s 10th Janpath residence. Gogoi who is arriving back in Guwahati in the afternoon apprised the party president of the stepped up efforts by the dissident legislators to unseat him.Gandhi is believed to have asked Gogoi to continue. She is expected to pass an order to APCC to stop dissident activities.Gogoi on Wednesday said that the reasons for discontentment of the disgruntled members of the Congress would be looked into.
