Tarun Gogoi dead

Guwahati: Veteran Congress leader and former Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi is dead. He passed away in the evening at Guwahati Medical College Hospital where he was undergoing treatment of post COVID complications.

His condition deteriorated on Saturday as his organs did not properly respond to the line of treatment.

Probe on into Rs 30 cr publicity scam

An anti corruption and vigilance cell of Assam police questioned a circle of senior officers in the state directorate of information and public relations to probe a Rs 30 crore scam that took place during the erstwhile Congress government. The police team questioned deputy director Kanakeswar Gohain along with a few officers three days after they questioned director Ranjit Gogoi before taking many files in questions in their possession. IPS officer sent to jail

A lower court in Guwahati on Monday sent Dr N Rajamarathandan to jail after police produced the CID officer before it in connection with a case where he was charged with providing classified information to the associates of Soobodh Biswas. The IPS officer who was probing the role of Soobodh Biswas in the Silapothar clash was arrested two days back after several hours of interrogation. He was accused of making public the progress of the probe he was heading in an RTI response. He was remanded to two days police custody which expired on Monday and the investigators did not seek him in remand before the court which sent him to jail for fourteen days.

A lower court in Dhemaji sent Soobodh Biswas to fourteen days judicial custody after the alleged master mind behind the Silapothar clash was produced before it on Monday. Two of his associates who were brought to Assam from West Bengal on transit remand were sent to police custody for interrogation. The duo were picked up a couple of days back to be interrogated. Biswas’ term for police remand ended and the investigators did not seek his remand before the court which then sent him to jail.

Ex-ULFA aikhya mancha protests government’s move

The ex-ULFA cadres are dead opposed to the government’s move to grant citizenship to Hindu Bangaldeshis in Assam. A general meeting of the Ex-ULFA aikhya mancha was held at Dimalgaon community hall in Kokrajhar on Sunday. A new Kokrajhar district committee of ex-ULFA Aikhya Mancha was formed with Suresh Roy as president and Hemen Roy as secretary in the meeting. Voting over in Dhemaji by election

Amid a massive security arrangement the polling  in the Dhemaji assembly by election concluded with huge turn out. Of the five candidates, the luckiest would be announced on April 13 afternoon after the final round of vote counting. The polling started at 7 in the morning where over seventy five per cent of the 2,19,751 voters exercised their franchise till 4 in the afternoon across 273 booths. MMC doctors conduct media clinic at press club

Senior physicians from Panbazar based MMC hospital Dr Madhab Rajbongshi and Dr Hitendra Nath Chakravarty graced the evening OPD clinic at Guwahati Press Club on Saturday for the benefit of its members along with their dependants. Over 30 participants received necessary consultations from the doctors after regular check-up of blood pressures. Staff nurses Sewali Deka Pathak and Gitumoni Thakuria supported the camp. Dhemaji by poll going on

Amid a massive security arrangement Dhemaji assembly constituency goes to by polls on Sunday where 2,19,751 electorates are deciding the fate of five candidates in the fray. Voters in large number are making long queues in front of the 273 polling booths to exercise their franchise after the voting began at seven in the morning. The voting will conclude at four in the afternoon. The by election which is required following the election if Pradan Baruah to Lok Sabha last year, witnesses a direct contest between Dr Ranoj Pegu from BJP and his nearest Congress rival Babul Sonowal. ULFA sticks to independence gun

The United Liberation Front of Asom observed its foundation day on Friday reiterating its struggle for an independent Assam compelling authorities to tighten security across the state. ULFA cadres have observed the day at Kakopathar where the outfit in rank and file vowed to carry forward the struggle to make Assam free of decade old exploitation. Former Cong minister joins BJP

Senior Congress leader and former minister Sumitra Patir joined BJP in Dhemaji on Friday just three days before the  assembly by elections. Patir, who elected to the assembly twice with Congress ticket joined the ruling party at a brief function at the Dhemaji Circuit House attended by Chief minister Sarbanabda Sonowal and senior cabinet colleague Himanta Biswa Sarma. In his quick reaction, state Congress president Ripun Bora said the tribal leader joined BJP to get rid of the on going APSC probe where her two sons were among the beneficiaries in question.
