Novel on Lachit Borphukan released

A historic novel titled 'Mahanayak Lachit Borphukan' based on the life of great heroic character, Lachit Borphukan who fought against mighty Mughal, penned by Dr Jagadindra Raychoudhury, educationist and writer was released on 1st July, Sunday at Guwahati Press Club. Gracing the occasion senior journalist D.N. Chakraborty said while the heroic exploits of Chatrapati Shibaji and Maharana Pratap Singh had widely been discussed through text books and other writings in many languages, there had been little discussion and publicity about the incomparable heroism and unique leadership of the great Assamese warrior Lachit Borphukan.

Another speaker, Padmashree Ajay Dutta, ex MLA and social worker also paid tribute to Lachit Borphuan for his great leadership during the great battle of Sarighat..Writer Raychoudhury on his speech, narrated the contribution of father of Lachit Borphukan, Momai Tamuli Borborua for building up character of Lachit Borphukan.

Guwahati Press Club secretary, Nava Thakuria also spoke on the occasion as a guest of honour.The meeting was addressed by Bipul Sarma, Chandrajit Saikia and Rupam Baruah. The meeting was anchored by Namrata Dutta and vote of thanks was given by Ramkrishna Sarma. The book was published by Chandra Prakash

The overall flood situation starts improving on Sunday following the halt of rains in the catchment areas of Arunachal Pradesh. The water level of the Brahmaputra and its tributeries are gradually receding during the last 24 hours. “The waterlevels of the mighty river are expected to recede further during the last 24 hours,” water resources development department officials told Assam Times on Sunday. Surface communications that came into a grinding halt in Jorhat, Sivasagar, Dibrugarh, Lakhimpur and Dhemaji have been restored after flood waters damaging crops in several hectors in Lakhimpur and Dhemaji districts.
Assam is most unsafe for women. The state tops the list of crimes against fair sex in the entire north eastern region. According to the National Crime Records Bureau report the state remains in the seventh place in the all India level. Assam jumped to 17,449 cases of crimes against women in 2013 as against 13,544 in 2012. The Centre will resume the Lower Subansiri Hydroelectric Project only after consultations with the people of Assam. Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi seeks more trains for Assam in the upcoming rail budget. In a letter to railway minister Sadananda Gowda on Saturday, Gogoi stressed a super fast weekly express train between Dibrugarh and Pune. This is apart from daily inter-city express trains between Guwahati and Murkongselek, Guwahati and Naharlagun, Rangiya and Naharlagun, Rangiya and Dibrugarh. Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi and APCC president Bhubneswar Kalita are understood to have been preparing to urge Sonia Gandhi to resolve the dissidence within the Congress legislature party.Both Gogoi and Kalita are set to hand over an APCC resolution adopted recently to Sonia Gandhi urging the high command to resolve the issue at an earlier date.
