A historic novel titled 'Mahanayak Lachit Borphukan' based on the life of great heroic character, Lachit Borphukan who fought against mighty Mughal, penned by Dr Jagadindra Raychoudhury, educationist and writer was released on 1st July, Sunday at Guwahati Press Club. Gracing the occasion senior journalist D.N. Chakraborty said while the heroic exploits of Chatrapati Shibaji and Maharana Pratap Singh had widely been discussed through text books and other writings in many languages, there had been little discussion and publicity about the incomparable heroism and unique leadership of the great Assamese warrior Lachit Borphukan.
Another speaker, Padmashree Ajay Dutta, ex MLA and social worker also paid tribute to Lachit Borphuan for his great leadership during the great battle of Sarighat..Writer Raychoudhury on his speech, narrated the contribution of father of Lachit Borphukan, Momai Tamuli Borborua for building up character of Lachit Borphukan.

FINER has welcomed the rail budget after it was tabled in Parliamnt by Sadananda Gowda on Tuesday. According to the industry body, the rail budget has not only rightly diagnosed the ailments of the Indian Railways, but also prescribed a clear roadmap and corrective actions ahead. FINER officials said that Gowda has come out with a strong action plan to complete pending projects including projects of national status in the North Eastern region in a time-bound manner.
Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi pins hopes on a Rs 1,450 crore central fund for infrastructure development in10 state universities. Amid simmering controversy over the eviction drive in Guwahati, the Assam State Human Right Commission has asked chief secretary to conduct an enquiry into the allegations that Chandra Devi had to lose her life after failing to bribe the eviction officials. A division bench of Commission, comprising its chairman Aftab H. Saikia, member Tarun Phookan, taking suo moto cognizance based on news paper reports and a complaint issued notice to the Chief Secretary asking him to cause a prompt and inclusive enquiry to be conducted into the complaint as well as the news item submit the report thereof before this Commission within 30 days of receipt of the Notice, vide its order dated 07/07/...
A huge Rs 750-crore project will give Guwahati fresh lease of life. The entire fund would be utilized in revamping the capital city’s drainage system. According to the Kamrup Metro district administration, the Guwahati Metropolitan Development Authority was working on a scientific drainage plan for the city. A detailed project report for the plan has been under discussion. GMDA is in the process of identifying low lying areas to start a scientific survey to plan a modern drainage system.
Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi urged the Centre to set up a counter-insurgency coordination mechanism involving police forces to deal with the insurgency problem in the state. During his meeting with prime minister Narendra Modi in New Delhi on Monday, Gogoi said that the Maoists have spread its base in some pockets of upper Assam. The chief requested Modi to include Tinsukia and Dibrugarh districts within the ambit of the integrated action plan to combat extremism. Gogoi apprised Modi of the plans to strengthen policing the riverine areas by setting up river police stations.
Floodwaters are still wreaking havoc in Lakhimpur and Dhemaji districts displacing thousands of people. The river Brahmaputra and its tributaries are flowing above the danger level striking panic among the people in both the districts. The recurrence of rains in the catchment areas seems to have added more woes these days. The district administrations have yet to set up relief camps for the affected in Jonai revenue circle of Dhemaji district and Subansiri revenue circle of North Lakhimpur district.
Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi raised a number of issues confronting the state as he met prime minister Narendra Modi in New Delhi on Monday.
